This is for Dave Tong Razz. I post these because I have gotten much help in the past from this thread and others like them.

Today in Lincoln Park:

More 2002 Leoville Barton ($35), at least 2 cases
Still Haut Brion, Cantemerle, Pontet Canet, Smith Haut, Ducru Beaucaillou.

New today:

2002 Reignac $20
2001 (yes, 2001) Monbousquet at $45- pretty good price, but I left it alone.

No Latour yet, but I'll keep checking. If I strike it at $120 I'll buy a case.

*******
This IS next year!

CostCo Item numbers are wierd. I've seen the same item number used for different vintages of the same wine (Penfolds Grange is a good example) yet on the other hand I've seen several different numbers for Leoville-Barton. I've no idea what number they are using for the 2002 LBs.

So the answer is not necessarily, but it's a good starting point.

I'd love to have a friendly contact in Costco and get a printout from their database.

Anyone? I'm curious as well before heading out. I was in Kendall the other day but didn't really get a chance to look around.

Yes. I still remember one Sunday morning I got a phone call from a fellow forumite back East telling me there are some 2001 Rieussec sitting around. Smile

Think we'll have to wait 'til next year when the 2003 Bordeaux hits, be interesting to see the price points.

Thanks for the updates on Costco, however when I asked the question I was mostly refering to wines that one could buy at Costco...all the time...wines that are good, and servable, and to have on hand for day to day guests or family, or of course, even myself!

I am not into the expensive wines (yet), so I am interested to know about the 12.00/750 ml range..that would generally be in stock most places, all the time. For example I enjoyed St Francis Old Wine Zin 2001 and the Capolla ones I have bought have been good too. I usually like Merlot.

I am getting more and more interested in wine and am finding I enjoy this interest as a hobby more than anything else. I find it all so interesting.

Thanks, GwenieO

Well I was just at a small little Sicilian Restaurant in Pasedena and I noticed they St Francis Zinfandel for $87.00, that's the one I said I liked for about $12.00 @ Costco.
The food there was excellent though.

The problem with Costco is that they are one of the top wine retailers worldwide which means they move wine in and out quickly...which also means that what you see on the shelf today may not be there tomorrow. They usually have a nice handful of $12 or so bottles for both reds and whites. Which do you prefer and then maybe I can make recommendations on wines that I have seen readily available at Costco's in my area.

Restaurants mark up their wines significantly...but for a restaurant to mark up a wine 7x's is quite high...I suspect that the St. Francis Zin that you saw on the menu was a different bottling or a reserve bottling.

I thought that also Donna, but the menu did not specify. You'd think they would have advertised it a bit, if it was a "better" label.

For whites, 2004 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc should be widely available at Costcos, $12.69 or so is the price tag. 2004 Nobilo Icon Sauvignon Blanc should also be available in the same price range. Time to time, 2001 or 2002 German Riesling will still pop up, usually south of $15, should all be very nice.

For reds, look for Australia or varietals other than Cab or Merlot from California. Greg Norman line should fit the bill nicely, especially considering most Australian wine are more fruit forward and easier accepted by casual wine crowds.

The Los Feliz Costco has a pretty good selection right now -- at least compared to the junk at my Costco:

'01 Mondavi Reserve ($99)
'01 Feudi San Gregorio Serpico ($58)
'01 Guiraud ($50)
'01 Larkmead ($31)

Santa Clara (Coleman) had Margaux at $113

It also had Marques de Casa Concha 2003 (also some 2002s mixed in) for $12.69

They also had both 03 and 04 Rosemount Show Reserve Chardonnay at $12. Has anyone tried the 04 yet? Should I stock up on the 03 (WS90) while I still can?

Thank You Donna and Pyang. I think those are the beginnings to the answers that I am looking for.

I also go to Sam's Club, which has a pretty good selection and most tend to be well stocked and the same wines over and over, as I mentioned above.

Ok Donna...I like reds about the 12.00 range. I buy St Michelle, St Frances, Capolla....I usually get these at Sam's. At Costco I have not decided which one I like best and you are right they do seem to switch around around a lot.

Ty, Pyang. I'll try a Greg Norman and more of the Australian reds and compare it to the California ones that I have mostly been tasting.

Any other recommendations...keep 'em coming..

Gwen
