Our friends down south will have far better selections for under $30...the le volte was ok, but 4 bottles we have consumed have shown little consistency. Looking forward to trying big brother in a few weeks.

Literally anything Felsina. The regular CC and the Riserva are both well under $30, but if I were you, I'd cheat and go to $35 to get the Rancia Riserva. Not as full-bodied as the Felsina, but a truly delightful, terroir-driven CC, Riecine is crazy good for under $30. On the truly inexpensive end, Di Majo Norante Sangiovese for under $10 is one of the world's great QPRs IMHO.

I am a big fan of Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montalcino which can be had for $25-$30 or Frescolbaldi Castiglioni, which is a Cabernet Sangiovese blend, for about $25-30.

Le Volte is one i buy regularly.
The years 1999, 2000, 2001 where very good, then for some reason the next years were less interesting and i stoped buying. The 2006 vintage is back on track.

Other wines under 30$: I like 'Rosso di Montalcino' wines very much, eg: La Rasina. Call it simplistic, i like it.

Agree with big and red, Avignonesi VNdiM is excellent. I am a fan of Villa Cerna, which makes a nice, smooth Chianti Classico that's good QPR.

Lots of people like Nipozzano, but I've tired of it, and find it too oaky these days.

I wasn't that impressed with the Le Volte either but I do like the Le Macchiole Rosso which is around $28.

2005 Giacomo Mori Chianti ($20)
2004 San Giusto a Rentananno Chianti Classico ($24)

*a wine that I forget its name but will find out* ($20)

For some reason, I haven't been drinking a lot of Rosso recently, BUT

Ciacci Piccolomini, Sassetti (Pertimali), Ucceliera, and most especially Pacenti never dissapoint.

2004 produced some great Rosso for around $20. Altesino and Collosorbo come to mind.

As Machine alludes, prices in Canada is not the same as prices in the US. So while you can surely "cheat" and go to $35 for the Felsina Rancia Reserva in the US, this wine is $60 at LCBO in Canada (assuming you can get it, which is a huge assumption) which is cheating to the point of highway robbery!

Another vote for the Avignonesi...I can usually find it online for low $20's. My local LWS had the 03 (which is better than the 04)for $21, but this year the 04 was $28.

On a side note, the Riserva (Grande Annate) is awesome...just had a bottle a few nights ago.

I can usually get the Avignonesi VNdiM Normale for about $25.

I agree, the Grand Annate is an awesome bottle. I have both the 2001 and 2004 cellered for future enjoyment. I believe that it go 10-15 years without a problem.

Look for the Aia Vecchia "Lagone," a merlot/cab franc/sangiovese bottling which is in the neighborhood of $17US, so should meet your criterion even at LCBO pricing.

Another vote for the Pacenti.
As well, Casanova di Neri makes a very good Rosso IMO, as well as the Brancaia Tre.

Found another one....

2004 Ruffino Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Lodola Nuova

I really enjoyed this wine.
Decanted for an hour or so, as I cooked and it was very smooth, lots of fruit, bit of citrus.

The 05 is out right now at the LCBO.
Gonna pick some more up.
