Hello to all. I am new here and excited to get in to discussions with all of you. I thank you ahead of time for the help.

I was recently in a wine store and saw a bottle of 1994 Lafite Rothschild for sale- $200

I know that this is not one of the best vintages, but just wanted to know if this is a good buy. The cheapest i've seen that vintage for online is $333 with an avg price of about $450. Is it still worth drinking even though it was not the best year?

They also had a bottle of '94 Mouton-Rothschild for the same price- $200

Thank You

The 1994 Lafite was served at several of the WS Grand Tour events, I think it was over 2 or 3 years. I thought it was an 86 pointer, but WA assigned a 90 and WS assigned a 93. Whatever the score, it was a shallow, astringent, austere wine, with little fruit or pleasure when I tasted it in 2002, 2003 & 2004. I guess it could be better now, but I sure wouldn't waste $200 to find out....

I totally agree with latour67 on this. I had this wine about a month ago and was extremely disappointed. I think I gave it 85 or 86 points, and found it thin and without those Pauillac features (cigar/cedar/graphite) that I'm used to in first growth Bordeaux from the area. I can think of better places to put $200.

Can you guys point me in the direction of a good first growth in the 300 price range? This will be my first! Costco has some good values such as Angelus and Leoville Las Cases, 05's for future prices. 280 and 299 respectivly. Also the same place had a 94 Mouton-Roth for 200. Was a good wine for that buy? Also, would the 94 lafite be good to flip getting it for 200? Thanks for all your help!

If it's first growth you must have and also relatively easy to find, then I would suggest 2001 Haut Brion which should be readily available for well under $300.

On flipping, unless you have a few bottles, it is tough to flip unless you are a regular on wine commune in which case you would know already. Not worth the effort IMHO for one bottle.

NW,

I think your best bet would be to forget about the 94 Lafite or a 94 Mouton. Even though they may increase in value over time, I don't think its worth your time, effort, risk, or expense.

If you have a reason to pursue the 1994 vintage, or are looking for a First Growth to drink in the near future, consider the 1994 Latour, or 1994 Haut Brion. Otherwise, your best First Growth values would probably be---Haut Brion, especially with your $300 price limit.

For drinking now, although the 1985 Haut Brion exceeds your $300, it is about $450, it is fully mature, and about a 94/95 pointer. For drinking in the future, the 2001 Haut Brion is also a 94/95 pointer that can be found for $250/$275. Good luck!
