My college age son should either feel as if he's been betrayed, or, I should feel as if I've found a new rock band to follow--goodbye Beatles. Just got the most recent issue of WS in the mail today, with an amazing piece in it regarding Maynard James Keenan, lead singer of Tool, and his sterling collection of wines. The incongruity of his collection with (my perception of) his angry and angst ridden style of music, is perplexing. I can't wait to talk to my son about this one. Tool was, and may still be, his favorite band. Looks like Keenan has possibly moved on to "A Perfect Circle", a new band. But, what an interesting discovery. Old fogies out there without a child who is into Tool's style of music will not be quite as able to grasp how Keenan's music just doesn't fit the image of a serious wine collector. (I am an old fogie with a child who loves Tool.)

I can't stand Tool. Does that mean I'm old now?

Well, maybe not old by the biological clock, but older than dirt if music tastes are in question! By those standards, I am a fossil.

NOTE FROM DHG: I've edited some of the expletives from the song. But, this is one of Tool's more "sedate" tunes. With lyrics like these, it's hard to reconcile Tool's lead singer's music with his wine. (Where's that thread that asks what music you listen to when drinking wine? I mean, could someone really "pair" music, such as from "Jerk Off", while drinking a classic California Cab, a world class Bordeaux, a Penfold's Grange? I guess Mr. Keenan of Tool can, and it blows me away!)

"JERK OFF"

Someone told me once
that there's a right and wrong,
and that punishment
would come to those
who dare to cross the line.

But it must not be true
for jerk-offs like you.
Maybe it takes longer to catch a total asshole.
but I'm tired of waiting.
Maybe it's just bull____t and I should play GOD,
and shoot you myself.*
Because I'm tired of waiting.

Consequences dictate
our course of action
and it doesn't matter what's right.
It's only wrong if you get caught.
If consequences dictate
my course of action
I should play GOD
and shoot you myself.*
I'm very tired of waiting.

I should
kick you,
beat you,
f__k you,
and then shoot you in your f____ng head.

I keep my tools in the garage. Sammy Hagar collects wine and his music still sucks. Good taste and good music do not necessarily go hand in hand.

If anyone can beat the nuance contained in P3's reply, I'll be amazed! That was great!

While not a huge fan of Tool, I do like their stuff. My music of choice at the winery is usually Blink 182 or Linkin Park. Turns out that type of music goes very well with high-end Cali Pinot. Cool And the occasional Tool song just adds a little extra... flavor.

I remember goin out back and gathering up The Frogs to play Frog Baseball while exterminating The Beatles with my trusty size 12s.

TOOL has to be one of the most influential bands from the 90s. If they're not your cup of tea, then don't bloody drink it.

Kinda cool that Maynard collects, next TOOL gig I go to I'll try to get backstage by flashing him with a bottle of Beaucastle instead of getting my girlfriend drunk enough to raise the roof. Smile

two things that seem to impress the ladies: bad musicians and expensive wine; hence the connection is all about the women and less frequent jerking off

Passion turns intentions into habits.

p3, music, like wine, is highly subjective. to state tool or hagar "sucks" simply means one thing. you are ignorant.

tbird - talkin about shows that bore the **** out of ya... Counting Crows / Wallflowers. I fell asleep.

One is not supposed to fall asleep at concerts... unless they're REALLY intoxicated. Smile

TOOL, good shows. Drummer is freaking amazing.

dj, thus the subjectiveness of music. one man's "boring" is anothers "good show".
i agree they are all amazing players. rush are amazing players as well. and they collect wine also. that doesn't stop 'em from being boring live. at least, to me.

cheers!

Tool blows dead bears and seagulls. I bought the album Lateralus after reading high praise, but it is the ultimate bloated rock album. Plodding, meaningless ****e. Makes '80's Black Sabbath seem cutting edge. Maynard James Keenan is a Perfect Circle Jerk and the fact that he collects wine means that he makes waaaay too much money for writing crap music and the kids are not alright. Just my opinion of course. WILCO RULES!!!!

A band that I have never heard nor heard about. Wow! The lyrics posted above are distinctly crap but that doesn't make them a bad act, I'd be interested to hear them.

Sometimes bands just don't cross the water this way, which makes up for all the ones that don't cross the other way. Mind you Bush never made it here and they are British.

As for wine drinkers supporting each other for the sake of it Confused Confused Confused Confused Confused Alex Ferguson, the red-nosed, boot-kicking, stud-farm-taunting manager of Manchester United is a wine drinker: nuff said.

Well, I'll tell you, when I saw that WS on Tool's lead singer, it just made me think that the old boy (39?) had pulled a fast one on a bunch of kids. I think of Tool as being like "Rage against the Machine" and other groups that have such strident, anti-establishment music. But, all in all, I think they're laughing their way all the way to the bank at the kids that buy their music while these groups are really "establishment" people. Keenan's love of Penfold's Grange and his vertical collection is certainly following the establishment crowd's thinking.

That said, some riotously entertaining comments above made and interesting exchange of musical preferences. I'm not going to go beat Paul McCartney to death, and hope no one wants to slander him! ;-)

KB, you're not missing anything if you don't have any Tools. Brian, you've got a great sense of humor too! P3's "hand in hand" comment was really great, especially in light of the song's title. Tbird's on a roll. DJ too.

I like heavy, independent music and I've always thought Tool was rather commercial. At that they probably ARE laughing their way to the bank. But then the best music I have in my collection was generally made by young people who had to give up the band and persue something that could actually make them a living!

But as for heavy music and wine, well I really do like very intense music, and I guess I like that in my wine too. Is that why something like 2002 Two Hands Brave Faces was one of the best wines I've ever had and I've never had a Bordeaux that I was seriously impressed by?

I like Tool. I like the fact that they don't stick to the 3:00 radio format in their songs (CD versions)...they change and expand...much like fine wine. Plus their CD artwork is pretty darn cool. Other notables I wouldn't be surprised to f
