I was reading a tasting note of his the other day and was thinking that I haven't seen him around lately. Maybe he's gotten obsessive about his triathalon training.

He converted to Islam and quit drinking. He didn't tell me his new name though yet.
Actually, I still communicate with him. He's around, but is in a no-post phase in his life right now. Please respect his privacy. Thank You |

I'm still around (thanks for the heads-up PH). I've taken on a new position at work which doesn't leave me much free time during the day.
And yes, Altaholic, a lot of my free time outside of the office has focused on the triathlon. Thanks for remembering me. Go HOKIES!!! |

Wine consumption has been down... far down.
We had a biggest loser contest at work to see who could lose the most weight. I went from 245 on January 2nd to 213 last Friday (it was weigh-out). So during those 3 months, we had (maybe) 1 bottle per week!!! Go HOKIES!!! |

WTH? Did you put on 30 pounds since I last saw you? No way you were 245 last year, or maybe it's that we're always sitting and we get drunk which makes me not too observant. Or maybe you cheated and put weights in your pocket for the weigh in - so you'd win easy. Congrats anyway. That's damm good. |

Yup... 245. For the Philly and NYC Offline last year (they were both within a few weeks of one another), I was probably around the 230-235 mark. When we decided to have this contest (which was at our holiday party in mid-December) I went crazy, trying to gain as much as I could... no kidding. So by Jan 2 I was up to 245.
No cheating here. We made sure everyone emptied their pockets, all jewlery came off, pant legs had to be pulled up (to make sure no one had ankle weights), etc. We were serious!!! We were debating weighing-in with just underwear (yeah, even the girls were for it!!!), but a few of us thought HR would have a problem with that. Go HOKIES!!! |

mwagner, I didn’t intend to draw you out of the “no posting” mode that you were in. Congratulations on the weight loss and good luck with the triathlon training. I’ve thought about doing a triathlon because I am a good cyclist and a decent runner but I am a marginal swimmer – my daughter can beat me in the 100 freestyle by quite a bit. If I do anything like that it has to be a duathalon. Phenomenal weight loss – I take it you have laid off of the purchases from d'artagnan and the potatoes fried in duck fat?

To lose like him, the key is to put on a fast 15 pounds first. |

No problem at all. I didn't realize how much I missed you guys (and this place) until you pulled me from posting retirement!!!
Regarding the tri - I'm not a good swimmer, and not a great runner (in fact I have bad knees and really shouldn't be running). But I'd like to think I'm an above average biker. At any rate, it was just one of those... "I need to try something new, try to push my body to see what it can do." I'm not looking to place, I'm just looking to finish without stopping (no treading water, no coasting on the bike and no walking during the run). I've been swimming 1 mile+ for a few weeks now, I can easily do the 22 mile bike and I'm up to 5 miles running (out of 6 necessary for an Olympic tri). So I'm almost at full distances. Now I have to go past full distances and start putting them together. Go HOKIES!!! |

Hey Wagner,
Have you lost a few pounds? Also, Do you find when you excercise a lot you are less interested in food and wine? |

Yup... about 30 pounds.
I wouldn't say less interested, but I'd say I've been focusing more on the training, so food and wine have taken a back seat. But I wouldn't say "less interested." Go HOKIES!!! |

mwag, I don’t expect you to hang around and contribute to the forum but I am curious how your triathlon attempts went. Have you competed yet? How did you like, or dislike, the training regimen? Any training injuries? How much weight did you end up losing? If you actually participated in a triathlon are you going to again? And lastly, are you still drinking wine? Just curious.

Hey Alta (and all other WS friends)...
All is well in good ol' NJ. Yeah, I'm really getting into the tri stuff. I've had 3 races so far this year, one on Saturday and 4 more races after... with my biggest the day after I turn 30. Yup... on August 17, I'll be 30, and one day... and I'll be competing in Timberman in New Hampshire. It's a half-ironman... 1.2mi swim, 56mi bike and 13mi run. Training has been eating up all free time outside the office. It's hectic... but I do enjoy it. I found a bunch of local guys that are triathletes too... so its always nice to have some training partners. Wine is pretty much reserved for the weekends only... and even still, it's only a glass a night. My purhcases (as well as comsumption) has really taken a hit. Im sure if I tolf everyone what my last few purchases were, I'd be laughed off the board. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an email... mattwagner 'at' comcast 'dot' net. And (I know I said it last year), I really will try to be better about checking in here. Thanks for thinking of me. Go HOKIES!!! |

Outstanding! Glad to hear it is going well. A half-ironman is a hell of a race, best of luck! Give us a hint: Does the wine you're buying now have a penguin or a kangaroo on the label?
