It really depends on where you are located. Where I live (Vancouver, Canada) there are very few choices because all wine sales are controlled by the government. I salivate at the options that those in other parts of the world are able to access.
If you are just starting out, find a local wine club to join. They will provide you with a lot of great advice about your local market.
The best thing that I found was a "product consultant" who works at my local government liquor store. She has consistently provided me with great advice and has really helped me expand my wine horizons.
