I personally don't care for the Wikipedia model. For all I know, the information is created by a room full of monkeys diligently typing away somewhere and perhaps creating some unkown Shakespearean plays in the process.

Actually Wikipedia is reasonably well policed. Which begs the question, why a new site? Why not just add to wikipedia?

It's actually a mediawiki sister site, to be interconnected with wikipedia.
The main reasons to fork from wikipedia are to
A) allow VinOpinions.org to be structured to better provide pages on individual wines (logical hierarchy), and
B) allow an open-access wine rating application to run within the system. We want individuals to be able to rate wines on a 0-100 scale, and have the averaged results posted in real-time.
BTW: the long-term collaborative effort of monkeys built what we call civilization.
