I'm finally back and getting caught up.

Shipping is actually starting tomorrow for California. We're using GSO so it will all be overnight. Out of CA will mostly go out next Monday and Tuesday although we may get some out to the East Coast on Friday.

We're pushing back release times on everything starting this Spring. I really like what an extra 6 months in bottle has done for a lot of our wines, so we'll be pushing 08 Syrah and 08 Pinot to next Fall. I already did that with the 07 Haut Tubee and really like how that has turned out.

I've had Windy Oaks several times, but Stefania only once and it was newly bottled.
As I recall it's lighter bodied, with lemon and peach and a mineral finish. Decent acidity and was wearing its oak surprisingly well for such a young wine.
Reminded me more of Cooper Garrod if you've had that.

Certainly a step up from previous vintages of Chaine d'Or chardonnay.

I just had a bottle of the Chard. It could still benefit from bottle time, but there was a reason I tried it already. Let me tell you, as really not a big fan of CA Chard, it was a nice bottle, particularly given its price point. Nice and light, no "butterball" here. Citrus and floral on the nose, good acid and light oak on the mouth. Everyone is a critic Paul, but I'd give it just a tad more oak. Maybe it will show more oak after it settles?

All in all, given the price point (and how early I drank it), top honours.

Paul uses a "shocking" amount of new oak, given the profile in the bottle today... You might need oak wine glasses to get it any oakier! j/k

But not kidding... Let me cancel Wayfarer's vote by voting to keep the oak the way it is! I think it's perfect. Let's not get all crazy here!!

Might just have been the bottle, but trust me, the oak was very light. /shrug De gustibus and all that. It's Paul's wine, and he's going to make it how he wants to...just the way things should be.

Me and the local UPS guy, we get along great. He takes good care of us, and all he asks is I not bring him more than 20 boxes at a time, or he has to call a second truck and they doc him some commission for that. So, I space it out, 15-20 every day, works great because that's what fits in a Toyota FJ. I know for sure though that 3 marked G-Man went out today, I loaded them, plus Jahnke, I know that went too.

Were almost through everyone. 25-30 more to go which will mostly be next week. I'm likely to be asleep in 20 minutes, the rest of the day after UPS, we picked up Harvest Moon Cabernet and processed four bins. Tong came by and took some pictures, maybe he'll get them up in his blog.

I actually thought a contest to guess the new oak amount in the Chard would be fun. Figured if I didn't tell people, they'd never guess. It's 75% new oak, a mix of Claude Gillet and Seguin Moreau. This year is 80% new. It's barrel fermented also so it sees a 'shocking' amount of new oak. The vineyard is pretty special though and it takes the new oak like it's just a kiss.

Jerry Anderson and I have talked a lot about how it might age and show the oak over time, but no one has really tried. I have the oldest bottles (2005) around, Jerry always just drank it young. There's no technical reason it won't age like a Grand Cru Burgundy, the numbers are in that same range, we've just never tried to see what happens.

If you give it all to Jahnke, you'd never find out!

Blog post is up. I nibbled a few of the leftover grapes; they tasted very good to me. I also got to taste a barrel sample of another 2009. It's early days, but everything is pointing to another great year.

It rather depends how many you have and how you feel about 'travel shock'.
I've yet to be convinced that it exists.

We opened a Haut Tubbe last night. It was so good that we opened a second.
