The SAQ Signature in Montreal has the 1961 Domaine Huet Le Mont Moelleux Premiere Trie on for around $160 for 750 mL.

Anyone familiar with Vouvray who can tell me whether a presumably well stored 1961 is still alive and kicking?

Thanks.

Still very much alive... I haven't tasted it myself, but numerous people I know have, and they were quite impressed.

Given the age of the wine, I think the price tag is very reasonable.

$218USD in the States and no guaranty of provenance.

The SAQ will take back the bottle if it's no good.

Not a bad deal, seemingly.

I think it's in Oz Clarke's 'Grapes' he talks about the Vouvray producers getting together in the mid 70's to form an association. They agreed to meet at one particular winery because they had enough of the 49 for everyone to have with dinner. The 1849.

mitPradikat- Along those same lines, the SAQ is showing a few

1953 Vouvray Le Mont Domaine Huet demi-sec ($209CND)

in stock as well. Just mentioning...

These wines are likely Chateau Library Releases. The SAQ doesn't typically deal with reselling private collections through their retail outlets.

I have had the '29 and the '47. Both were still alive and kicking. Depends on many variables other than vintage, of course.

Chenin Blanc is remarkably sturdy and long lived. I would agree with the others, this is a low risk buy for something that you do not get every day.

Thanks! I will indeed go for it. 1961 is my brother's birth year, and this will be for his 50th bash a year and a half from now.

I've bought three bottles, so they have three left. They were kind enough to store them for me until I'm back in Montreal in late April. Cheers!
