Well, Florida proved to be worthy of their ranking, and worthy of the BCS bid. They will be the undisputed #1 team in the AP poll, coaches poll, and Harris poll. The interesting question is who is 2nd best? Strong arguments can be made for OSU, LSU, USC, Boise State, Louisville, Auburn and Wisconsin. Several of these teams looked awfully good in their bowl games. How would they have fared in a playoff? Would any of them matched up well with Florida? Who are the front-runners for 2007 season? Is it too early to start a thread for next year?

It's never too early to start thinking about next year. Congrats to the Florida Gators. P.S. I sure hope the rumors of Pete Carroll and the Miami Dolphins are completely false. Fight On!

I think the second spot will go to USC or possibly Boise with LSU in the top 4. Ohio State will fall more than one notch.

Congratulations to the Gators. They put a national ass whipping on OSU. Anybody else think Spurrier and his mad ego was a little bit bruised tonight. As for who is number two.... who cares. As a USC fan it's number one or it's not enough.

They truly got their asses whipped. I never thought this would happen. I’ve been a Buckeye fan since the 1st grade in 1981 and I’ve never seen them get beat that badly. Congrats to Florida and Ohio State graduate Urban Meyer.

Anyone who might have told me before the bowl season that Penn State and Wisconsin would win their bowls and that OSU and Michigan would lose theirs would have gotten very little consideration, outside of an amused chuckle, from me. Both the Wolverines and Buckeyes came out flat, got outplayed, and got way out-coached. Both had a game-plan going into the game, and neither one changed, despite the fact that neither plan was working. Antonio Pittman averaged 6.2 yards per carry for OSU. Why did he only get 10 carries!? In OSU's only scoring drive, Pittman outran/outmaneuvered 3 Florida defenders (in open space), so the 'defensive speed' argument doesn't carry much sway with me. (All defenses look fast when they're running after a QB who's standing still.) Florida knew we were coming after their QB (we didn't do much to disguise that), so they didn't even attempt vertical passing (longest reception of the game was 20 yards, including the run after the catch). That's exactly what OSU should have been doing. Instead, Smith was repeatedly set in a 5-step drop with both defensive ends pushing deep on the outside. Great: if they want to do that, run some delays to the spot they just left... like we did on Pittman's touchdown! Why we didn't mix more of that in is beyond me. Congratulations to Florida for playing (and coaching) their best game of the season when it mattered the most. They definitely deserve the National Championship. That being said, that was not the Buckeye team that got them to the National Championship game. The fact the the AP voters kept OSU at #2 makes me think that they agree.

Pitt was totally underutilized. They could have used him to set up the pass. It was very painful for me to watch.

Stick; I think you stuffed the ballot box to win that bottle of wine! You win, fair and square. I will try to get to FedEx in the next several days to mail your wine. Enjoy.

As a lifelong Buckeye fan and OSU alum, I take great pride in all things related to the University. That includes the marching band and the “script Ohio” that the band is well known for. Still, I had to laugh when I saw this in reference to the beating that they took from Florida.

If it’s any consolation, all of us watching the game at a neighbors agreed the Ohio band was far superior to Florida’s.

rtnwin, You have good taste; OSU's marching band is indeed far superior. Alta, Where did you find that picture?! Though I am still recovering emotionally from that... game... that picture is hilarious.

stickman, My sister & Father-in-law both sent me emails with that picture. I erased one of them and one of my daughters "accidently" erased the other one but I was able to find it through Google.

I think USC is the only team in the contry that could match Florida's speed and athleticism. They showed that against the other Big 10 pretender. SC blew their chance with sloppy play against UCLA and Oregon State. I think that SC would have given Florida a better game. My hat is off to Florida. They played a hell of a game and deserve to be champions. I wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts about Notre Dame.

Uhhhh, USC has beaten Auburn twice and Arkansas twice in the past 4 years, and none (and I mean none) of these games was remotely close. This includes a 23 - 0 pasting of Auburn 3 years ago when they were ranked in the top 5 as well as this years shellacking of Arky in Arky. SC has proven time and time again that they usually beat the best of the best of top conferences and this includes the SEC.

mattach,
I was not knocking usc, but since you brought it up, if they were in the sec, they would lose 2-3 conference games every year. usc should completely dominate the west coast on talent alone, nuch less coaching, yet they lost to ucra and the beavs, oh the horror of it. Yeah they beat nd, hurray and yes they beat the piggies, but the piggies might as well have me playing qb. Day in and day out, the sec has the best speed and athletic talent throughout the league.
Lets have them play at ga, at home against ut, at lus, at home against ala, at fla, at home against sc, etc. and see how they would come out. Obviously this is not going to happen, but year in and year out the schedule in the sec is absolutely brutal while the pac 10 hs many pansies year in and year out.
Stanford = Vandy Washington St = MSU Oregon = Bama Washington = KY Az = Ole Miss Az St = UCLA = SC Ore St = TU Cal = ARK Ga, Auburn, LUS, Fla and USC are all superior to everyone else most of the time.

do you watch much pac-10 ball? every year people say this and every year we crush teams from every conference. this year it just happened to be top teams from the sec (Arky), big 10 (MI) and big 12 (Neb). i disagree with your assessment that we would lose 2-3 games to sec schools...the style of ball the sec plays is an easy fit for USC to dominate. zero creativity on the offense and rely on your defense to dominate. and please don't use the quarterback excuse for Arky's loss. they seemed to do just fine knocking of TN and Aubie and taking LSU to the wire - remember, we absolutely crushed them AT HOME, and it wasn't even close
