This is my first post on the forums, so take it easy on me. I have read many and found a ton of them to eventually move into arguments on economics and price gauging. Let me preface with I am young, but I like to drink very good wine. I blame my father for ruining me with first growth bordeaux since the age of 12.
My question. I have recently acquired a 3lt bottle of 1990 Veuve La Grande Dame Rose. I have seen the WS ratings (about 3 of them) and they have been rising ever since the first one. Currently I think it rated a 93 pts. The rating also mentioned drinking by 2006. My questions: 1) Does anyone know what other ratings/commentaries have been written about it (RP)? 2) Has anyone tried it personally and what did they think of it? 3) What is it worth? I only ask not to establish a sale price but to figure out if I should trade it for lesser bottles or drink it myself. I bought it as a surprise for my parents 30th wedding anniversary, but my dad really doesn't like Champagne much, but my mother does. Thanks in advance for any replies/advice. JT |

It can be quite nice. I am not a fan of the style and yellow label is blah in my book. Very inconsistent. But I guess you expect more from an expensive bottle. And you have 4-in-1! Champagne is very house style and personal perference specific. Price wise you are looking at $1200 retail if you can even get it. How much did you pay for it? ---------------------------------- bonvivantguide.com Bordeaux, Super Tuscan, Cali Cabs |

Thanks for the reply Bon Vivant. I paid over $500 for it, but it came with a really interesting case. It is plexiglass with a leather handle made by Louise Vitton I believe. Very showy, definately the greatest presentation I have ever seen on a bottle and somewhat over the top.

Well, if you drink Veuve Clicquot, you're drinking a product owned by the Louis Vuitton Moet & Chandon Group (LVMC). Same goes for Dom Perignon, Krug, Chateau D'Yquem, Hennessy and many more. See, I drink wine too --- 'We want the finest wines available to humanity...we want them here, and we want them now!!' |

I would imagine that to be more than a 93 point wine, though I've never had it. I did have the 1990 La Grande Dame, but not the rose. 1990 was a spectacular year for Champagne, the best in my experience. I envy you that wonderful bottle.
Just one more sip. |

Board-O, it seems that you have had this wine in the past.
A while ago, but I did a search and found one short discussion of it. I will assume that you liked it and think I should hold on to it for a special event... JT |

Jason, I don't think I've had the 1990 rose, but I could be mistaken. We did a series of Champagne dinners with wines from 1990. I remember the La Grande Dame, but not the rose. My memory ain't what it used to be.
I looked up the quote you listed. I think that was in error. I believe I was posting about the regular Grande Dame, not the rose. Just one more sip. |

I've not had the Rose, but the '90 LGD is one of the finest Champagnes I have ever tasted. I can't imagine that this is not a wonderful bottle of wine.

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin
1990 La Grande Dame Rose 92 POINTS ($235) Salmon-orange with a pale rim. Deep, smoky aromas of strawberry, pear cider, cinnamon, earth and maple syrup. Very rich in the mouth, but also shows excellent verve for a wine with such volume; superripe flavors of strawberry, rose petal, iron and earth. In texture and size, this comes across more like a red wine than a rose Champagne. Spicy finish is long and gripping. Nov/Dec '01 By Stephen Tanzer ****************** Veuve Clicquot 1990 Brut Rosé Champagne La Grande Dame Score: 92 POINTS Price: $235 Vibrant, this 1990 rosé delivers plenty of cherry and berry notes up front, then offers more aged elements of toast and hazelnut that keep on driving through the finish. It's all presented on a firm, well-integrated structure. Drink now through 2003. 3,900 cases made. (BS) WINE SPECTATOR Nov 30, 2001 *********************** Seems to be unanimous........... |

Jason:
I have had the VC GD Rose two times within the past two years. The first bottle was just ok and I was a little disapointed that it wasn't better. I bought it off a wine auction site. The last bottle was awesome which I had late last year. I do not have notes but it was one of the better rose's I have ever tasted. I purchased it from a very good wine store. With that large of a bottle, I think your good to drink now or hold for another few years. I find that most rose's do not last as long as their white champagne brothers in general. Enjoy!! |
