i am slowly and surely building up a cellar while learning wine and my own palate.

i'm tempted to splurge on some older wine to make sure that i like it, before investing (time and money) in current vintages.

i saw this bottle at my local store, is this a good use of $$ to see if older wines are my thing?

This is one of my handful of "wow" wines. I have two left in my cellar. I've had it nearly 6-7 times now and it's always been phenomenal. Textbook example of a superior Rhone. Worth every bit of the 97 pts. Parker and Spectator gave it. If this is a well stored bottle, in good shape, you should see the light here.

I too have 2 bottles and I've never tried the wine, but careful! I've heard there's a lot of bottle variation so I really hope mine will show well. And I wish you the same...

The question is, how much is it offered at?

The B.C. Liquor Dist. Stores are asking $295CDN.
I've had this wine once...and as DRAB said...it is a 'Wow' wine!
But, at 300 clams...
I will say this...if I had a LARGE wine budget ($$$), I'd jump on it.
When are you ever going to get a chance like this again?

As an aside...speaking of great Rhone's...I see that Premier Cru (San Fran.) is offering 1989 Hermitage La Chapelle, Jaboulet RP96 (Pre-Arrival) for $270US...and the 100RP 1990 at $550US (also Pre-Arrival).

$300 bones is definitely the most i've ever spent on a bottle, and i hope it doesn't become a habit.

if they are still there tomorrow i'm going over to get both. might as well go big, doesn't sound like i'll regret it.

well, unfortunately i was too late and someone scooped those 2 bottles on me.

i did pick up a couple of the beaucastel 95's for half the price. opinions on when these should be enjoyed?

i also found an 89 hugel gewurz that i'm pretty excited about.

The 1989 Beaucastel can be had for the low $200s USD, south of the border. Time for a road trip.

One of the best wines I have ever had. The 1990 is almost as good and a bit cheaper also.

MLPS, Do you ever read the original post?

Thanks of the input on the 89, 90 and 95 Beaucastel.

It's disheartening to read a thread like this. Name calling and personal attacks on one another are not called for just because one has a difference of opinion.

Can't we all get along.

I honestly drank a 2005 Beaucastel CdP last month, so I deserve it.

Really....what did you think? I tried it about a month ago as well. I thought it was too new world in style. I like the '04 better.

Anyway...back to business....

You should be locked up! How horrible...as if drinking and enjoying the '89 wasn't enough, you have to really mess it all up by opening the '05! I really hope you don't say you enjoyed it...(because we all know that is impossible).

Wow, a spirited difference of opinion! But, I am fortunate, I bought a case of this wine upon release and can afford to sample a few now. What I wanted to ask you is, did you decant the wine first and if so for how long?
Really points out the way being a "wine" enthusiast (pardon) has changed for the average guy! Even taking into consideration inflation I don't think $19.99 in 1991 would equate to the 100+ this wine costs today! Tom

I would say my average decant time has been 1-2 hours. After that I haven't noticed much change in the wine, and it typically stays very enjoyable with no decline over the 1-2 hours afterwards that it's consumed.

Thanks for the input. Have to drag one out and give it a taste. Tom

Please report back. Especially to tell us how terrible it is, but how good it will be... Wink

In all seriousness...It would be great to read a recent TN. I haven't had it for a year or two now.

If anyone is looking for '89 Beaucastel, I got an email from VinFolio this morning offering the wine at $229 on pre-arrival.

Consider two identical individuals, say Joe and Steve, except (their names and) Joe knows not to grab a glass of wine by the bowl whereas Steve does not. Who is more intelligent? Now tell me again that wine appreciation does not require intelligence again! For your information, knowledge is a key component of intelligence. To claim wine appreciation does not require an added intelligence from your everyday Joe is just outright ridiculous.

To put it in your perspective; Plenty of people recognize that the physical makeup of the words "your" and "you're" are different. But to implement the proper one does require some intelligence.
