I'm somehow turning 50 this year (don't ask me how that happened) and am planning a blowout tasting. Looking for order and food pairing recommendations for the following:
1) A vintage Champagne
2) 2005 Domaine des Baumard Quarts des Chaume
3) Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Auslese Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2005
4) A good Montrachet (my wife loves these)
5) A J.K. Carriere Pinot Noir (ditto)
6) 2001 Paloma Merlot Spring Mountain
7) 1999 Guigal CdP
8) 2005 Clos des Papes CdP
9) 1958 Haut Brion (managed to get a half bottle)
10) 2002 Phelps Insignia
11) 2003 Quilceda Creek Cab
12) 2002 Lewis Cab Napa Valley (my last name)
13) 2001 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova
14) 2001 Chateau Rieussec
15) 1994 Fonseva Port

Would appreciate any suggestions

Steve,

Your post reminded me of a few lines from the Bob Seger song, "Like a Rock."

Twenty years now
Whered they go?
Twenty years
I dont know
Sit and I wonder sometimes
Where theyve gone

And sometimes late at night
When Im bathed in the firelight
The moon comes callin a ghostly white
And I recall
Recall ....
---------------------------------------------
Time flies doesn't it Steve?? And regarding your list of wines for the blowout tasting, I can only ask, what's your address??

Big Grin Classic!!

Nice lineup of wines, befitting the occasion. I think you've got them in a pretty good order already.

Happy Birthday, Steve!

I'd suggest moving the Paloma down the list to at least after the CdP's. It's a pretty subtantial wine and would be more closely married to the Cabs in your lineup rather than following Pinot Noir and preceeding the Chateauneufs.

Cheers!

We ended up breaking things into two days - only because the food was too much, not because anyone had too much to drink. Got through the Guigal CdP and everyone was full! Lesson is - if you're doing pairings, two bites per plate is plenty. Anyway, we took a half hour off after the Guigal, tasted the '58 Haut Brion (awesome!)and had the cake and the Rieussec. On Sunday afternoon, we picked up with the Paloma, and finished.

The Prum Riesling was a huge hit, especially paired with the shrimp. Other favorites were the Sine Qua Non and the Taylor Fladgate. The overwhelming food favorite was the coq au vin.

Let's see...ten more years (nah, make it five)to go and I can do this again.

I want to thank everyone for their kind comments. Think that when I do this again, I'll include at least one member of these forums.

stevec,

Glad you had a nice time. Curious how the Casanova di Neri showed. It's young, young, young, as we both know, but am curious if it mellowed after several hours of air.

We opened the Casanova on Saturday and it was tighter than a nun's rear end. Sunday it was really, really good. I have another bottle for the next extravaganza in 5 or 10 years.

The big disappointment was the Paloma. Maybe I've gotten spoiled by Washington and right bank Bordeaux Merlots, but the Paloma was very mediocre.

Thx,

I only have one solitary bottle of the CdNeri, and I'm not even looking at it for another five or six years. None of the few 2001 BdMs I've had have been drinkable without a day's decant, and then just barely. But, that's to be expected.

steve, any chance you took any TNs on the 94 Fonseca? For my tastes, this would be too young, but I'd be interested in your thoughts on that (after all, you tasted it, I didn't!) and your TNs in general.

Wow, I would have lost money on that. I never had a '58 Bordeaux showing well at all. Congratulations and Happy Birthday Steve!

Sorry I took so long for the reply...the Taylor '94 was so good, I can't imagine it being any better. Possibly because it was in a 375 (half) bottle? Anyway there were tons of tannins and red fruit. Very little sweetness comparwedd to other vintage Ports I've had.

I have another half bottle. Be interesting to see how that stacks up when I do this again.
