Greetings,
I have had a great time surfing this site. So much info and a lot of fun to read. I recently acquired a 1985, G. H. Mumm & Cie, Grand Cordon, Reims, Magnum, and am wondering if anyone knows anything about it. It has the upside down, triangular at the bottom label, with the red sash. I have had a heck of a time even finding it anywhere or any information, online and off. No luck, at all. I have been told that it is a super rare find. But, I haven't found anything to validate this opinion. Truthfully, I might have paid more than I should have for it(at a charity auction, so it was for a good cause). But, I thought I'd look into it anyway. Any ideas, thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Tim |

Welcome to the boards, 1985 was one of the finest vintages of the 80's for champange.Although the size of your bottle, makes it somewhat attractive, the producer is only known for producing good quality champange, it is neither excellent, nor is it outstanding. If your bottle is labelled, Mumm, Rene Lalou, then it is a cuvee that is very good.Hope this helps only my opinion.

Drthvader,
Thanks for the info. Yes, I was told it was quite rare, and am afraid that it isn't. But, as I said, it was for charity. Someone also told me that champagne doesn't age like wine, and this probably should have been opened many years ago. Is this true? Or, does champagne age too? It doesn't have any of those characteristics that you mentioned either. But, hopefully it will be good, when, and if, we open it. Thank you again. And please, if anyone else has any info, or anything to add, please do. Regards, Tim |

All wine ages. It may well be that your champagne may have a quite different character that that you expect of the genre, but it will age and change. It may lose its sparkle but the still wine will be interesting. Usually, they will last 8 to 10 years and in that time develop in the normal progression of white wines. Mumm is a sound wine and in most cases NV wines depreciate quite rapidly. However I have (accidentally) cellared a Bollinger RD (aka Tradition) from 1973 (disgorged about 1988),for 15 years. It was petillant rather than sparkling but was quite superb. Deep in both colour and palate, with not a trace of oxidation. |

Mumm went through real tough times from the late 70's until their new wine-maker came on in the late 90's. I would auction it off.

Their NVs have been 'inconsistent' to put it diplomatically. 1985 was a great year and should still be a quality sparkler for vintage but I'd take note of GMT's point about the winemaker: drink up for the the fun but don't expect it to be Bolly, Dom P, or Grande Dame. I don't see the point of selling as you bought it at a charity auction and the charity's concerns were more on your mind than selling for profit so enjoy it, I hope it's good.
