Lascombes

Are looking at Rauzan Gassies and Montrose as well. Maybe I should purchase these as well?

I really cut back on the number of 2005 Bordeaux futures I purchased. I had planned on 4-5 cases but after seeing the prices I settled on 2-3 cases. Here are the futures I bought:

6 x 2005 Château Kirwan @ $47.50
12 x 2005 Château Léoville Barton @ $85.00
12 x 2005 Château Malescot St. Exupery @ $53.50

In addition, I purchased about 18 mixed bottles of inexpensive 2005 red bordeaux that I tried over the last 6 months (link to my TN's). I found what I think is a very good deal one of them so I bought a few:

3 x 2005 Château de Parenchere Cuvée Raphaël Bordeaux Supérieur @ $11.00

Like many others, my Bdx purchases were considerably lower than 2003. I bought:

Doisy-Daene
La Tour Blanche
Rieussec
Suduiraut

Malescot St. Exupery
Larcis Ducasse
Leoville Barton
Pavie
Pontet-Canet

James, thanks for the blog on how well the "value" wines in Bordeaux are tasting in 2005. I bought a lot of wines like the Gigault, Caronne St. Gemme and others. Around here the Puygeuraud was selling for a very reasonable $15 on futures. Next year however, I forsee the French dropping the term "value" from any wines associated with Bordeaux, along with the whole St. Emilion classification...

I'm waiting for the dollar to rebound a little bit. Sadly, I think the wait may be too long. The combination of price inflation coupled with the strong Euro make the prices kinda hard to swallow.

None, null, zero.

My money was better spent on CdP 2005, Barolo 2003 and a bunch of Austrian 2005&6. I try to buy wine only after tasting it, only a combination of a great vintage with reasonable prices (2000 was such an example) can persuade me to change my mind. 2005 is not the case.

1 x 2005 Leoville Las Cases
12 x 2005 Malmaison
2 x 2005 Malescot-St.-Exupéry
1 x 2005 Kirwan (magnum)

2000 Malmaison is a favorite, and I've already cracked a 2005 Malmaison to check it out (I was surprised with how early I got them- back in October). I think it needs time*, so I'll be looking for something that seems more ready at an everyday price. I don't mind dumpster diving (unlike Board-O) to get quality from lesser estates.

But I got the Malmaison at the same price I got the 2000 Malmaison - Just under $20. I should get more.

* Yes, I know that sounds stupid, but the 2000 with air is so darned good... I had to keep buying more to make sure I have some to age. The 2005 seems a little tougher to open up.

When is your report coming out?

And now, thanks to Mr. Suckling's recent blog, I have added a case of Puygueraud.

12 x Malmaison

May change slightly depending on what I come across (not always that easy in AZ) but that will pretty much do it. Either those or one bottle of Petrus.

Malescot St-Expury
Lagrange St-Julien
Pavie Macquin
Sociando Mallet
Branaire Ducru
Smith Haut Lafite
Kirwan
Domaine de l'A
Chateau Joanin Becot
Haut-Bailly

Mostly 3 bottle lots.

I plan to purchase many Cru bourgeois bottles as in every great vintage, all the smaller Chateau do just as well as some classified growths in off-vintages.

Look forward to your smaller bordeaux winery ratings for the 2005 vintage James. Issue March 31st, 2008, right?

Maybe your signature line doesn't help either. Big Grin

Between JS's raving reviews of the 2005 Bordeaux and the latest JM's updated Rhone reviews it's beginning to become apparent to me that we need to enforce new vintage rules:

Only one vintage of the century per wine growing region in alternating format.

Lentini -

How much time do you think on the '05 Malmaison before it's ready?

I just had another bottle over the past two evenings. Although JS is saying 2005s will be nice young, I don't think the '05 Malmaison is an early drinker.

The 2000 was tight and sometimes seemed a bit off for the first 45 minutes of air, then began to absolutely sing - a great wine to decant and drink young in my opinion. Or save.

The 2005 is better the next day, but did not open up in 2-3 hours the first night. And it never opened up as well as the 2000 does.

I'm going to hold the rest of mine for 2-3 years before drinking. Of course, these seem to have come out very early for the vintage. Maybe they just need a few more months to settle. Hmmm... I'll have to try another to find out I guess

I have been buying first and second growth Bordeaux futures for the last twenty years. For the 2005's, I was so offended by the prices that I decided not to engage. I did finally purchase Pape Clement at a very good price.

Maybe Bought:

If people were offended by 2005 prices, then what did they think of the 2006 prices??
