And maybe bring along some cream cheese, lox and capers while you're at it?

Definitely will need some lox and a schmear. And maybe some whitefish salad while you are at it...

Is T-Bird bringing some H&H bagels for a side by side tasting?

However, IF St Viateaur fails to win the bagel taste-off, then clearly it was because of Fairmount not being there and they would have been the best. Big Grin

Here in St. John's, Newfoundland we are fortunate to have a little bakery with a proper steam oven that makes Montreal style bagels and excellent breads. They are 95% as good as the original article. New York bagels pale in comparison.

cheese whiz???? YOU have got to be kidding right. Why anyone in their right mind would put cheese whiz on their bagel. That is crazy talk!!!!!

The Montreal bagel is a completely different species than that of any other baked good going by that name.
Although the New York bagel(I really like Murrays),is by far the best one of its type to be found in the United States, its totally different than its Montreal cousin.
I love them both, but if anybody put a gun to my head I would have to go with the Montreal bagel - especially the sesame seed ones straight from the St Viateur ovens.
As good as a breakfast consisting of a bagel with nova, onions cream cheese and tomato is at Barney Greengrass in New York, it pales in comparison to a "Beauty's Special" at Beauty's in Montreal.

For those that want to know all there is about St-Viateur Bagels (there's even a FAQ section and a place to order directly for the States) clicky

I love to go up to the store on Monkland and have breakfast. A good way to start the day. Smile

Must admit having had a sesame bagel, a raisin, a multigrain and a plain bagel in Montreal this past weekend at St-Viateur, my NY taste buds just don't find them that good =).

It's not chewy or dense enough for me.

Sounds like they'd pair well with the local wine.

Just one more sip.

That's unfortunately a true for most restaurants here.

However, the flip side to that is that corkage fees are illegal in BYOB's here. Nada Cool

That's actually only double the retail price for that wine here. You wanna really get screwed? Le Queue de Cheval. When I went to Chasse et Peche (twice) I ordered from their eclectic, lesser known wine selection. I was pleasantly surprised both times and the bill was easier to take. How did you like the food there?

the food quality was excellent and very fresh, tho their risotto was a bit oversalted.

heh I had a bottle of d'arenberg's stump jump for 60 CAD there ... (but this was 6 years ago where teh establishments had a 2cad = 1 USD if you bought a lapdance) I can't imagine paying the same for a stump jump with today's rates.

It happened bman. steve8 brought 6 dozen St-Viateur I believe. Grossie toasted em' up at evening's end and slapped on cream cheese and lox. Yummy!
A good alternative to the sliders.

Gotta give Steve8 better credit- he actually applied the cream cheese while I did the lox. They were very well received, the crowd devoured them.

*******
Not looking good for next year either.
