If so, besides hands on experience and attending tastings, school, etc. - are there any suggested readings for someone entering the wine director field? Also, looking for ops books as well.
The Oxford book(s) are a must as well as Andre Domine's big book is a great read. I like Andrea Immers's books, and I actually read a lot of WS particularly Sanderson. I also peruse wine lists on line at some of the best wine restaurants (2 glasses and above). I have found most (90%) of the people who order wine with dinner do not know much, but if you can suggest something that pairs well with their food, they will love you and come back to your place again and again. Read, eat, drink and experiment...it pays in many ways.

I noticed you are from NYC. Stop in at the Moore Brothers new wine store. Greg Moore was sommlier at one of the nations top French restaurants (Le Bec Fin n Philadelphia), and he loves to talk wine. Their wines are excellent and affordable.

Ratso - Le Bec Fin, ah the memories! I used to be in sales and went there many a time. Soft shelled crab to kill for, not die, but kill
I will definitely stop in to see Greg Moore over at Moore Brothers and talk shop.
One of my main projects is to compeltely revamp the current list, pump up the wines by the glass menu, add food pairings, flights, etc. Hopefully add several wine nights along with seminars and possibly even an education series of events as well.
