I had an interesting discussion with a friend last night. We are both big fans of chili and were discussing what wines we think would go with a hot bowl of spicy tomato based chili (with ground chuck and pork sausage). Any suggestions?

Our conclusion was a nice cold beer from sometime last month. But I thought I would ask and see if anyone had any great ideas. We split a few bottle of trappist ale that went wonderfully with the chili.

I'm with the others - beer. BTW, a friend brought me some beer from a Trappist monastery in Belgium and it was the finest beer I've ever had. She was on a year long tour of the world and Belgium was her first stop so maybe it was the fact that she carried it around the world for a year that made me appreciate it so much.

conscious, The reason you think it is the finest beer you have ever had, is because Belgium has the finest beer in the world! |

Wine+art - while I agree that Belgium has some of the finest beer in the world - I must acknowledge that German beer holds my heart. I lived in North East Germany on the Baltic for a year and the beer was incredible. Every little town had its own local brew that was better than anything I have been able to find in the states. Even their mass produced cheap beer (think budweise or Miller light) was better than anything I can find on tap in Tennesse.

With this dish...beer, and only beer.
Let's see... Pete's Wicked Strawberry Blonde? Grolsch? Pacifico? IPA? Sierra Nevada Pale Ale? Anything by Sam Adams? (And the list goes on, and on, and on, and on...)
