I was stuck in a long lineup at Starbucks today behind a big gaggle of high school students. They took forever, each of them ordering some fancy coffee that took nearly as long to order as it did to make.

First, aren't these kids too young to drink coffee? Second, where are they getting the money to buy 5 dollar beverages?

All I wanted was a simple, tall Pike Place. Grrr...I feel like such a curmudgeon!

There's a Starbucks at the top of my street and when I was coming home from work this evening, a 12 year old walked out with a Super-Venti-Grande whatever-the-crap-they-serve.

I thought the same thing.

True, Starbucks has developed an amazing following from the younger ones.
My daughter has been almost addicted to their 'Frappuccino' the past couple of years (she's 17).

In my day we didn't have fancy stores where they brew Grande decaf mocha frappuccinos. We walked uphill (both ways) through the snow to the local dry goods store where we bought a can of hot water for a nickel. Then we added dirt to it outside and stirred it till it looked like coffee. And then we drank it. And we liked it...

I didn't even know Timothy's was Canadian. I always thought it was affiliated with Seattle's Best. The other Canadian Chain is called Second Cup.

In either case, I think futronic is probably right. Just about everyone drinks Tim Horton's (Timmy's)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Hortons

And he is also right in that it is one disturbing coffee.

It is amazing. My 15 yr old always wants to stop at Starbucks too. Frankly, as someone who only drinks coffee black, I find they over roast their beans and I just don't find their stuff all that palatable.

My seniors can't get to class on time first period because they all go to Starbucks for their morning pick-me-up.

It is pervasive throughout high school. Even with the freshmen. If students don't come to school with coffee, then they powering down one of the various energy drinks.

High school? Try Junior High, it is the cool place to hang out.

I only get water at Starbucks, it is free, and extremely high quality water I must say. Plus, no waiting in line!

half the crap people order at starbucks is not coffee, its double whipped suger with flavour and a shot of extra suger.

I get it when highschool kids can afford starbucks, they work part time jobs and most of them have no expensises. Its the number of uni students who seem to find a way a afford it. Im currently a student and am shocked that there is ALWAYS a line at starbucks, with the cost of books, tuition, food, housing, ect I wonder were the money comes from.

I do however have to confess i find a way to ponny up for a Latte once or twice a week, other then that its black coffee.

If Edmonton is anything like Calgary then there is alot of oil money that trickles down to peolpes kids (not a bad thing, my life is paid for by oil). I can tell you its alot easier to spend 5bucks on a cup of what starbucks calls coffee if your not paying for it.

Big Grin Agree. That's about the age my daughter was when she was indoctrinated into the cult. She's in college now, and has learned that college and extra money and time for doublecarmelmochacinnofrappewhatevers doesn't exist like it did in high school.
I, myself, never developed a taste for coffee, so I'm consigned to the tragically unhip. Wine is the only slim thread of cool I have left.

One of the reasons coffee seems to taste like dirt is because before it was brewed, it was ground.

I'm a fan of Starbucks. Is there better coffee, sure, but Starbucks is in every city and airport I travel to, there coffee is always good ( I only order a simple coffee, nothing fancy) and they are on every corner.

I'm more than happy to pay my $1.84 for my cup.

When I was in high school, I drank horrible perked black coffee. I kept up the habit through college, even stooping to instant. After I no longer needed to stay up half the night studying, I gave it up.

I blame/credit Starbucks for hooking me back on coffee. Way before they became a monster selling sweetened milk beverages, Starbucks was known locally for importing and selling the best fresh roasted coffee from around the world. They latched onto the cappuccino-latte fashion long after the trend was well under way.

High school kids were lining up for lattes as least as far back as fifteen years ago, and middle school students not long after.

This all happened a bit before Seattle inflicted years of bad music on the world, and somewhat after a local company was responsible for buggy, annoying software becoming the nearly unavoidable standard. I'd like to brag that at least the area is renowned for its aircraft, but no one is sure when or if the next generation will get off the ground.

Coffee. Plain. No flavoring. A dollop of skim milk.

None of that pantie wearing coffee for me thank you.

I wasn't really aware there was such a thing as "too young" for coffee Confused

In high school, until I was old enough to sneek into night clubs, we hung out in coffee shops after school all the time. That said, we always hit local shops, not Starbucks.

Your post would have so much more authority had you not posted it on a website devoted to talking about wine. Razz

Someone needs to do the numbers, but I'm guessing a 12oz Starbucks latte - with or without panties - is healthier than a 12oz can of cola or those 16oz "energy drinks". Probably about even on the caffeine too; I believe that espresso has less caffeine than drip coffee.

Of course it doesn't say much for their appreciation of the value of money.
