Wine and sashimi are two of my favorite pastimes. I have not sucessfully been able to do both at the same time. I'm looking for wine to drink with sashimi in general and uni in particular. I've thought a dessert wine might go well with uni but I haven't hit it right yet.

Any suggestions?

PJ- the obvious answer is Sake! I will often drink cold sake when going out for sushi. I find it compliments well. The other option is reisling (german for a little sweeter, alsace for a little drier), gewurztraminer, Pinot Blanc or pinot gris.

Most recently I've been staying away from reds with Sushi/sashimi.

I'm sure you'll get other opinions here.

Yes, but I came here for an argument.

Oh! Oh! I'm sorry, this is abuse.

I have always found sparkling wine to go great with sushi and sashimi. Lately have been having proseccos, but champagne also historically works well.

champagne, particularly rose champagne goes well with sashimi/sushi IMO. Refresh my memory again, which fish/shellfish is uni?

thanks. Uni is sea urchin roe. It has a distinct taste which people seem to love or hate.

pjward,

i agree with grossie on his recommendations. My significant other has those types of whites when we go out for sushi. Me, I stick with a premium sake, but do sneek a sip of her wine when she's not looking!

As for uni in particular... well...!! Good uni is one of the most amazing gastronomic experiences! I think those who don't like it have probably not had good fresh stuff. I'm sure you'll agree that uni more than a couple of days old is already on the downslide. So, I don't drink ANYTHING with it.... I just ask sushi-san for another!

I love uni with a raw quail's egg yolk.

Champagne is my number one choiice for sushi and sashimi. The marriage of Champagne and hamichi-don is one of my most favorites.

Just one more sip.

First I would actually stick to Japanese beer such as Sapporo or Asahi when eating Sashimi and/or Sushi but would agree with earlier poster that Champagne goes very well with these.
