Um, sales tax is charged here in Texas as well. Maybe it's only on alcohol but I have literally dozens of receipts (I do high-end restaurant secret shops here in Austin) on which I've been charged tax. At least you can now deduct this.
funny wine quip goes here.

I reside in TX and will be going to visit my sister in San Jose. That dining establishment said in CA, sales tax is charged on "everything" including dining. Is that true? (All the restaurants I've been to in SF, never was I asked to be charged sales tax. Is this something new?)
Cities can have a sales tax as can counties in california. Most dining establishments I've been to do not but Berekely might. Just check with the restaurant before. Good luck

You must never eat out in Houston because dining establishments are taxable here as well.

I travel a lot as well and I can't remember the last time I wasn't charged sales tax, even some of my international travel included.

There are sales tax charged on "ready to eat" foods in California. Food purchased as groceries is not taxed. Plan on spending the extra 7-8+% depending on which county or city you are dining in.

I believe every place that has a sales tax taxes restaurant meals. If there are any that don't, I'm unaware of them.
Just one more sip.

California does not miss a chance to collect a tax on anything they can get away with.

Bars don't have to charge sales tax for alcohol, so, order AND PAY FOR that expensive bottle of vino at the BAR before you sit down at your table
