Got a two week trip to New England coming up in October and wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions on must-sees and must-dos.

We're starting in Boston for about four days and then taking off to who-knows-where. Our initial thoughts after leaving Boston are to head out to Nantucket and/or Martha's Vineyard and head north to Maine, then over to New Hampshire/Vermont ending by way of western Mass and Salem (close to Halloween). We've also thought about Nova Scotia but aren't sure...

The exact route and plans are a work in progress so any advice and suggestions would be much appreciated!

In Portland Maine I highly recommend Hugo's, Duck Fat, and Cinque Terre.

Check out Excelsior, Grill 23 and Meritage in the Boston Harbor Hotel. None are suitable for children though....

For things to do: catch a Red Sox game if theyre in the playoffs, rent a bike on nantucket, hit the Lobster Trap Co. on the Cape if you like fried seafood....
