A comment by the esteemed irwin in another thread made me wonder.....

Question:
What is the most you have spent in a restaurant for a dinner for two? If you've had a really extravagant dinner for more than two, just calculate the 2x cost. Wine included, pre tip.

Choices:
under $100
$101 - $200
$201 - $300
$301 - $400
$401 - $500
$501 - $600
$600 +

Question:
When including expensive wines in your meal, how do you calculate the tip?

Choices:
On the total tab.
I'll tip a higher % on the food portion and less on the wine.
It varies.

Only one time...Cyrus in Healdsburg. Best meal I have ever had so I dont mind but what pushed our bill up wasnt the wine, but the truffles!

They brought out a big ol truffle in a fancy box and asked if we wanted it included in our tasting menu- I didnt ask how much- we said yes. It was shaved over some risotto in one course...price tag...$100/ person!?!?!

Guess I am naive but from now on, hold the truffles! I'd have much rather spent the $200 on a nice bottle.

Well, there's a strip club in Austin that bills as "North Austin Restaurant" on credit card statements. Does that count?

I spent around $500 at Taillevant about 5 yrs ago. Same meal would be more than $600 with the current Euro/Dollar exchangerate.

Call me "esteemed".

Picasso in Vegas, Daniel and Cru in New York, Stonehill Tavern, Sona and Studio in LA/OC and Michael Mina in SF are some of my more memorable meals in the last year. I think this may be the reason my suits are not fitting as well as they used to. Wink

I've done $600+ *once*. It was at the Champany Inn, at Linlithgow just outside Edinburgh. This was back in 2000, before the bubble burst and before I had kids. The restaurant had a 1980 Grange for GBP350 and we decided to go for it. Best wine I ever tasted.

The only other time I've come close was at Manresa in Los Gatos. Chef's tasting dinner plus wine pairings for two.

It turned out quite well. Thanks for asking. The young lady food critic who came over for the bottling said it she could already taste how well it would age. She also raved about how well it paired with the Osso Bucco and Wild Mushroom Risotto I served with it.

I also took a bottle of the wine to a friend of mine who is a sommelier. On a blind tasting, e described the wine as follows: Has the color of a Pinot Noir, the nose of a Malbec, and OMFG it tastes like a Barolo. He's encouraging me to let it age for years. Well, I only corked 30 bottles. So, let's see how long that lasts.

not that I've ever been, because I don't do such things but, the question asked was

"What is the most you have spent in a restaurant for a dinner for two? If you've had a really extravagant dinner for more than two, just calculate the 2x cost. Wine included, pre tip."

So lap dances were not included in the dinner in question. =) I've heard though, that their supply of veuve has an intoxicating smell of strpper on the bouquet that you won't find anywhere else.

A friend of mine went there and said that Roberts Steakhouse is actually really good.

Speaking of those kind of “clubs” I had accountant friend that has done some work for Rick’s Cabaret Inter. which is a publicly traded “club”. Ticker is RICK. Check it out, the stock has actually done pretty well in the past year. I wonder what those board meetings are like...

Dinner at The Inn at Little Washington for my h birthday five years ago. Dinner, wine, tax, and tip came to about $850 for the three of us (my then 15 yo son was with us, and said he found the '86 Ridge Monet Bello I ordered to be inferior to the '94, he was right)


When in doubt, open another bottle.

Not the most expensive ever, but went to Morimoto New York the week before last and barely got out of the for $300 with tip. totally overpriced for the food we received, but the service was wonderul. Had a tasty Row Eleven pinot noir there that I paid way too much for, but it was my wife's birthday, so I can't complain. -mJ

I set my new record last year at Michel Rostang in Paris.

While worth every dollar, and I would do it again, it was over $500 more than my previous record.

I also set my new record today filling up my car on this side of the big pond.

The most for two would be $250 at Boa Steakhouse in Las Vegas. I brought my own wine and the sommelier waved the corkage after I offered him a taste of my David Arthur Cab. Their damn oysters were just too tasty.

I guess the expense really comes from the bottle of wine not necessarily the food. What the hell can you really eat to get to 500+ bucks? A pound of caviar?

Have yet to try wagyu, but now that you mentioned it, I have to add it to the list. Is it just a better/different steak?

I don't fully understand truffles either, are they just sprinkled over pasta? What dish do they compliment and what do they add?
