Hey everyone,

I'm 21 and fairly new to wine and cooking, but I'm planning on cooking dinner for a couple friends of mine and I need some help choosing wine and food to finish the menu.

So far I'm thinking of making:

-Baked sweet potato skins stuffed with brie, cranberries and walnuts

-Crusty pizza with pear, caramelized onions and gorgonzola

What wine would go well with these? Maybe a riesling? Also, does anyone have any ideas for a light salad-type dish or a dessert that would go well with these, or any other tips in general?

Thanks!

I agree with your instinct that something sweet will pair best with blue cheese, sweet potato and berries. I'd look for the Malvasia di Casorzo from La Sera -- it's a sweet, lightly sparkling red with an explosive nose of crushed strawberries. Or maybe look for a Brachetto d'Acqui -- a similar style Italian red.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look for both of those at the liquor store. Do you have any ideas for another dish that might go well with the dinner?

You seem to have a loose theme going with your ingredients – cheese and fruit are featured in each of the first two courses. If you want to continue that theme in the dessert, you could go with a Cream Cheese Crostata with Orange Marmalade – the recipe is at www.epicurious.com. It’s relatively easy to prepare (for a tart) and should make a nice closer for your meal.
At that web site, the recipe suggests a Vin Santo as a wine-pairing for this dish, and I would tend to agree.
The only downside to your menu is that it’s quite rich and sweet. Hopefully, your guests will arrive hungry.
Good luck.

Your meal sounds very delicious. I too would recommend looking for a sweet wine.

That crostata looks delicious... I think you're right though about the menu being a bit rich, so I'll probably look for something lighter to replace the sweet potato skins. Incidentally, the reason I'm trying to keep the dishes along the same lines is because I'd like to be able to pair them all with the same 1 or 2 bottles of wine, and the people I'm having over aren't big red wine drinkers. Maybe I'll make something relatively lean and chickeny to back off on the richness a little bit. (I'm new at this, as if you couldn't tell...)
