I may be in the Carmel/Monterrey/Big Sur area myself later this month. I have the following list of restaurants to try. Although I've been to Carmel/Monterrey a few times, I've never eaten at these places.

- Abalonetti's at the Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey
- Black Cat Bistro (Cambria, 1602 Main Street, (805) 927-1600)
- Deetjen’s Big Sur Restaurant (Big Sur, 30 miles south of Carmel, (831) 667-2377)
- Forge in the Forest (SW Corner of 5th & Junipero , Carmel, (831) 624-2233 ) $$ - $16 corkage
- Montrio Bistro (414 Calle Principal/Franklin St., Monterrey, (831) 648-8880 )
- Nepenthe (48510 Highway One, Big Sur, California - (831) 667-2345
- Pacific's Edge (120 Highlands Dr, Carmel, (831) 622-5445) $$$ dinner, $$ lounge/cocktails
- Passionfish (701 Lighthouse Ave/Congress Ave, Pacific Grove, (831) 655-3311) $$
- Roy's at Pebble Beach (The Inn at Spanish Bay, (831) 647-7423)
- Sow's Ear (Cambria, (805) 927-4865

LOVE Deetjen's, take time to walk around a bit. It's very beautiful in a hippy sort of way.

Nepenthe has the best views anywhere, nice wine list, fairly good food.

Just ate at the Forge in the Forest last week. Basic, but good food. I think I had a burger. Watch out for the Giant Cookie Dessert, it's deadly.

I think it was Abalonetti's that I ate at that had a FANTASTIC antipasto plate for lunch.

I enjoy both the Tap Room and the Grill at Pebble beach and highly recommend Little Napoli in Carmel if you feel like some Italian. They also have a nice wine bar next door that just opened up.

Enjoy!

I intend to die in a tavern: let the wine be placed near my dying mouth, so that when the choirs of angels come, they may say, “God be merciful to this drinker!”

Are you planning on being in the Los Olivos / Buellton / Lompoc area at all? I just returned today from the same trip (well, close: from Santa Maria through Santa Barbara by way of the aforementioned towns).

Cheers!

Ditto Passion Fish in Pacific Grove, I was just there couple weeks ago. Great wine list at just above retail, no point taking your own wine.

DoubleD, I would not include Roy’s on your list. You can go to the Roy’s chain almost anywhere and this particular Roy’s doubles as the hotel restaurant so the kitchen also does breakfast and room service. Going to Spanish Bay is good idea though. Have a drink outside when the bagpiper is playing or a cocktail at Traps where you have a sick view of the course and ocean. If you want to eat there, I would recommend Peppoli. Great Italian food, solid wine list and views of the course and ocean.

I appreciate the feedback. Good thing I posted the list.

I've already made reservations at Passionfish on a Friday night in case I am there. Will definitely consider drinks at Traps instead of dining at Roy's.

I'll throw in my $.02 on Nepenthe. Great place. As noted, food is decent. When I'm there, I feel like a beer, so up to you, of course. Be sure to get a table at the railing for those incredible views.
