I guess it's not as offensive at Burger King!
Just one more sip.

I've told this story before, but I have a frat brother with a very upscale restaurant in the Chicago area. He wired the place, in the beginning, with a transmitter to block cell phone signals. Phones just quietly lose their signal when customers enter his establishments.
He says customers occasionally question him about it, but no one has ever really complained. He just tells people it(loss of reception) must have something to do with the concrete block walls or something. Problem solved.

I had one of these once, but was informed that is was not legal to use due to FCC regs. Wish I had it back

I would fall into category 3. I dislike being heard/seen talking on the cell phone, but 99% of my conversations are useless, hence the discretion.

I played golf today at a private club. As you pull into the club the sign says "NO cellphone use on the club propert." That was nice. The greens were really fast. Fast greens, fast women and slow horses are the bane of my existence.

Private golf club that can't hire a literate signwriter? I'm with the phone on vibrate pretty much all the time crowd. I have an iPhone, and the ringer isn't loud enough anyway. If the phone rings I probably have to check it's not the babysitter. If I have to answer I'll leave the room to take the call. So where do you stand on texting in restaurants?

As long as it's "sexting" it's OK. Wanna pic of my junk Dave?

LOL. I remember seeing a sign at a tennis court that read, "NO PROFOUND LANGUAGE".

In regards to your comment about "no profound language".
Actually belonged to a club, in the South, once that had the same sign. You see the club would never admit that the ladies and gentlemen that belonged to the club would ever use profane language in public, so thus the sign. Same friendly reminder, but in a more genteel manner

This got me to thinking about a book I read recently, The Stork Club: American's Most Famous Nightspot and the Lost World of Cafe Society, by Ralph Blumenthal. This is where the rich and famous went to see and be seen back in the day. According to the author, the club owner Sherman Billingsly, would have a phone brought to the tables of his famous guests who received calls at the club. There was a convenient plug next to each table. Upstairs, in his switchboard room, he had recording equiptment so as to be the first to get all the juicy celebrity gossip. He, himself, was apparently carrying on quite a side-thing with Ethel Merman, of all people!

Recent issue of WS blew me away with the article re Mina. Shows a photo of 2 diners, with another diner standing right behind them TALKING on a cell phone. Now this is to be a classey place, yet WS shows that talking is okay. Naughty!!!
