I would welcome suggestions for a wine to go with French Onion soup.

Champagne and most whites will work. I'd probably go for Champagne with Riesling as my second choice.

Soup is ahead of prime rib paired with Millennium, a Cab/Merlot blend from Wash state.

THIS might help you. I also agree the sherry would work, but prefer Pinot with my onion soup.

If you're using good stock, definately Pinot.
