It looks like I will be going to Buenos Aires in a couple of weeks. Any restaurant, wine store or wines that are not exported I should look for

I have been here for two days now and have eaten at a very good Spanish "Plaza Mayor" and a very tasty Middle Eastern "Sarkia" restaurant. Tonight we went to a so so Italian, very popular here but food and wine list were okay at best.

A few months back I had dinner w/some friends and others in Atlanta. One of the guests was a consultant who had just gotten back from Argentina. He explained that due to the economic conditions, hotels and restaurants were a real bargain.

I'd love to head down that way some day for some wining, dining, and some of that fantastic fly fishing. I'll be interested in your notes and thoughts.

The other night we ate at Piegari a very good Italian Restaurant, I sorry I can not remmber the wines that we drank other than they are nothing amazing but very drinkable. All are Malbec, Cabernet or a mix of the two. Yesterday we went on a cruise of the river delta town of El Tigre, very cool. Stopped at a really nice restaurant Gato Blanco on the rivers edge, absolutely beautiful. Our bill with wine, for eight people came to les than 100. US. The dollar goes a long way here. Today for a late lunch we had an amazing meal at Cabana Las Lilas, some of the best beef I have ever had, great location, super service and way more than we could all eat. This is one of the most expensive restaurants here and it still was only about 28 per person. This includes six different appetizers, three kinds of beef cuts, salads, sides, wine and coffee for each person.

Sounds like a great time...

There was a recent article in one of the airline back-pocket mags - an interview w/Diane Lane (now there's some scenery!)and her trip(s) to Buenos Aires. She outlined a group of must-see places and must-stop restaurants - it all sounded very nice.

What was your airfare/travel like? Direct flight from LAX, or did you stop somewhere in between?

I'm just now seeing this thread. Sorry about my poor timing, bdamico. Your choice of Las Lilas was a good one. Absolutely the best carne ever. Chorizo and empanadas are to die for. My favorite expensive steakhouse when I lived in BA. Lots of good wine that, prior to the economic problems, was not exported, rather it was consumed internally. Bodegas Esmerelda, now of Catena fame, produces a Saint Felicien label, cabs, chard, malbec, and blends, is excellent. Just stay away from the beer, it's really bad. kybo, your comment about fly fishing hit home. Absolutely the best fly fishing in the world is in the south of Argentina. I'm not into the sport, but I've talked with people from all over the world, Japan, Canada, Russia, US, Australia, France, etc. who consistently rave about the fly fishing in Tierra del Fuego.
