Yesterday I had a 2004 JJ Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese after eating a butter cookie with icing. The wine brought out what I can only define as a "bad butter" taste, bitter almost. Maybe artificial butter was used in the baking? Anyway, was unpleasantly suprised. Had tried Spatlese's with sweet cookies before and enjoyed the combo. Not this time.
Just had an egg salad sandwich for lunch, and now afraid to open any wine until later.

From your experience, does anyone have any warnings for horrid pairings we should all look out for in the future?

A ripe Malbec with pasta with tomato sauce. With the acidity of the sauce, the wine just lied down and died. Some of the 2006 Malbecs, however are a bit more lively than usual and might stand up to a mild sauce.

A few month ago I tried to pair a white Crozes-Hermitage with some knid of fish (I forgot what exactly) and it was terrible, the finish became extremely fishy. Never again.

Although I would never do this, the worst that I can imagine would be:

not opening another bottle of champagne Smile

Red wine with "white" chocolate. Tasted like I was drinking water that had a bunch of old pennies soaking in it. Nasty.

Cheers!

When you eat anything from the can you must drink from the bottle.

White chocolate is what I was going to say, red wine with milk chocolate close second.

It's not as if I have ever intentionally made mac and cheese with tuna and salsa and then thought to myself, "what would go well with this". But, I do eat such comfort college type food on occasions, and just about always happen to have wine open, and thus have had red wine with the above. However, I have learned that red wine is absolutely disgusting with any kind of canned tuna. Bye the way, you can't drink from the bottle while eating such products, least you get floaters in the bottle. Wink

I found the worst pairing last night. One of the slower eaters was finishing up an Osso Buco with a nice 2002 Barolo. I was having a pistashio gelato and some biscotti. I had a sip of the Barolo; a nasty combination. I had to have a good laugh about that.

Ah Ratso, but how could you resist the Barolo after all. Hope you are well.
