We had a Sodastream when I grew up. I remember we bought it on holiday; I think my parents were trying to save money on fizzy drinks. It works, but the novelty soon wears off. The problem is with the pressure; unlike the disposable bulbs from traditional soda siphons you use the same cylinder for a while, so when it's new the soda comes out very fizzy indeed but soon it tails off and tastes like soda that's been open a day or two. One thing that was fun was to put wine in it (I used to make my own home brew) and make "champagne". Unfortunately if you put anything in the bottles other than water it tends to foam up and make a mess. If you've got a bunch of kitchen appliances that seemed like a good idea but you rarely use them - deep fat fryers, breadmakers, rice cookers, etc. then you'll love this.
