They have happy hours around here that put oysters on special. I know I have had 5 or 6 dozen at a sitting. I have never really tried to go "all out".

A little drift: There used to be a place here that had all you can eat LOBSTER! It was like $35 and they served lobsters that were around 1 to 1 1/2 pounds. My father and I ate somewhere around 17! I miss that little cholesterol heaven!

We used to go to the World Croquet Championships every year at Sonoma Cutrer Winery. Never for the croquet, but for the food and the auctions. They would have a large setup of three different kinds of oysters, that they would be shucking and putting on ice. We would stand there for an hour slurping down oysters. Never even tried to count them.

A lot....

A few years ago when my brother in law was working at Bouchon he tried his best to fill us up with oysters. He stopped trying after the 8th or 9th tray....

I've downed 24 for lunch on several occasions - accompanied only by a squirt of lemon and a Sancerre...a real treat.

As an appetizer I don't think I could do more than 2 dozen...if I were just eating oysters, I wouldn't be surprised if I could put away 50. Especially with a touch of good cocktail sauce and a touch of horseradish. Hold the lemon please! YUM! -mJ

Here's another question for you all! Do you chew your oysters or swallow them whole?

A couple of quick chews, then down, basically intact. Mmmmmm, I'm going to get some this week! Happy hour, 2 for 1 is a wonderful thing!

Easily 50 while just enjoying them.

If it was for a bet, over 100 would be possible Smile

Eight on the half shell is about all I can handle. My dad loves them so I have to have them when we go to a restaurant that features oysters as an appetizer. The texture is what keeps me from over indulging.

Powered by a solid bottle of bubbly I could indulge in a dozen prior to the salad course. Of and by themselves? I'm betting I could down 36. Smile

Wish you hadn't mention martinis. Now all I can think about is the oyster and 3-martini lunch scene from Mad Men.

My record? Two, at an offline at Union in Seattle. They substituted the traditional condiments with a lovely dolop of lemon ice.

I remember seeing on Food Network some restaurant in New Orleans where they do an oyster eating contest each year. I think people got 5 or 10 minutes to scarf as many as they could.
