I've eaten there several times. It's quite popular and the atmosphere makes for a warm experience, but while I found the food appealing there are a number of kitchens in the area that outshine it, particularly Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen, which does comfort food with more flair.

Here’s a link to our recent report on Napa dining:

Thanks for the info. Tim...I read the article a while back but didn't remember seeing anything about Market. Cindy's was another place we had talked about - thanks for the tips!

I prefer Green Valley Cafe, a local joint in St. Helena over either the Market or Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen.

I don't know what their dinner schedule is as I am always there for lunch. I will check next time I visit.

I enjoy Green Valley for lunch as well. It's open for lunch and dinner Tues-Sat.

Slightly off topic, where are the good Mexican restaurants in Napa Valley these days?

Tim,

I moved to Napa from Stockton about two years ago, and have not been able to find a good Mexican restaurant comparable to the ones in Stockton.

I now get my Mexican food fix by visiting the taco truck in front of Wal Mart on Soscol Avenue, they have great authentic tacos, burritos and quesadillas.

I remember enjoying Market when I was there a couple of months ago. Food was decent, portions were huge. Wine list was pretty good also,

There are 2 good mexican hole in the walls in the valley....

Tacqueria Tres Hermanos on First Street in the plaza where the old Clocktower / Water Fountain used to be.

Tacqueria Puerta Vallarta in Calistoga on the strip. Right by Cal-Mart. Gotta go down an alley to find it... but it's slammin stuff.

DJ Hombre,

Been to Tres Hermanos a few times, not bad for Napa, but not close to the Stockton joints. Wink

pyang - yeah yeah yeah. My brothers are the same way... not too big on them... but I still dig the joint.

Santa Rosa has a much better tacqueria scene, btw. Smile

Tacqueria Las Palmas (sp?) over on Santa Rosa Ave right before the LB Gardens next to the Laundromat (i think it's a laundromat). The owner definatly knows what he's doing with pork. Smile

Tacqueria El Sombrero near Siduri. I can't remember the name of the street, but if you're going south on Airway Ct and pass Siduri, take a left onto the big street and it's at the end of the first or second block on the right hand side.

Thanks. The first one is at 415 Santa Rosa Ave and the second one is at 810-A Piner Ave. I'll check them out.

I too like Tacqueria El Sombrero #2 in SR but even it is not quite as good as Tacqueria El Sombrero #1 in Healdsburg. That place truly rocks. I bump into winemakers like Bob Cabral of Williams Selyem there all the time. My longtime personal favorite – Tacqueria Santa Rosa on Mendocino near the Junior College – has gone downhill recently. Sigh.

Is that the one across the street from Oakville Grocery and Rosenblum? I do like that place.

That's the place, perhaps my favorite Mexican restaurant north of SF.

Tim, growing up in Fresno, I got to know some really traditional Mexican food joints. Yummy stuff. I've been looking for the same stuff in Napa and have been extremely disappointed. You'd think Napa would have great Mexican food.

Tacos, in particular, are often made with crunch Ortega like shells!!!!! Mad Pyang is right, some of the best stuff comes out of the trucks--but I'm always a little leary. I also like Moore's landing on the Napa River for chili verde.
Is anyone else confused by the lack of very good Mexican food?
