If there's a finer steak to be had anyplace in the world, it's eluded me. The appetizers, salads, sides, and desserts all approach perfection. The wine list, while a bit of a disappointment, is surprisingly well-priced. I urge any of you who have the opportunity to dine there to jump on it, but it'll spoil you for other steakhouses.

Just one more sip.

I last ate there a couple of years ago when I was in town for business. Amazing. The food is great, and the service is...well...let's say it has character.

We're not talking about the one in Great Neck right?

We decided to go to Keen's instead last time we were in NYC. We'll have to try Luger's next time.

it's a bit of a hike from mid town nyc.

Peter Luger's has two locations, one in Brooklyn and in Great Neck.

i'm aware, is there that big of a difference in the two locations to where they shouldn't be compared?

Board-O (or anyone else)- if you ever make it to Nashville, I can cook you a steak to rival what Peter Luger's serves - farm fresh, no steroids, hormones, etc.(and while my cellar may not be deep - it is the right price Wink).

Be careful what you wish for, thirsty man!

There's no difference in the food between the two Peter Luger's. We've been to both many times.

Just one more sip.

I've been to the one in great neck 3 times already and have always gotten the porter house medium rare.

I go always expecting a nice crunchy char on the steaks but I never get it =(. The wife and I have been disappointed so gave up on the one in great neck.

I do love their tomato and onions and the various sides, but can't goto a steak house on their apps and sides.

Never been to the one in brooklyn though.

And I'll take thirsty man on that offer too!

I don't want a crunchy char. I want the meat seared and tender and juicy, just the way Luger's does it.

Just one more sip.

I think that is what they call Pittsburgh rare.

I have not been to Luger’s but it’s on the list for sure. I have a buddy in NY that says they also make the best burger he has ever had, but it’s only offered for lunch. Anyone have the burger?

And yes, the burger is very worthwhile. Juicy and thick.

have been to lugers's more times than I can count, bklyn used to get better cuts as that’s were all the old school loyal customers went, but after nyc changed smoking laws and great neck still allowed smoking cuts were equally distributed as loyals starting going east a lot more.
As for burgers, they are very big and very good but not the best imho. For a basic burger the burger joint gets my vote, the village bistro gets my vote for a big heavy burger. Shake shack has a great burger as well, all are cheaper than lugers as well.
Once took my mother there for her b-day and the waiter sung her an opera as he was a retired opera singer, pretty cool.
As a heads up if going you must bring cash as no credit is allowed (house account is allowed)

the lunch burgers do get alot of decent press but i'll never find out as i think it'd be a sin to go there and not order the porterhouse.

i've also heard the LI location isn't as good as brooklyn but i'll easily defer to board-o's judgement as i've never been out there.

I thought the steak was decent the last time I was there. The sides were OK, didn't do much for me.

Ditto on the sides, I'd go very good on the steak. Unfortunately I didn't get the porterhouse as Jen doesn't eat red meat and I wasn't up for eating for two... I won't make that mistake again. Have had very good results with Luger's mail order beef.

A personal issue i have with Lugers is the quality of the service. Have gone more than a half hour waiting for water glass to be refilled after asking numerous times for more water. Make a reservation, show up on time and wait there while a loyal with his party of 7 get seated prior to me w/o reservation drives me nuts.
Wine list is a secondary thought for them if that.
When paying that type of money it can’t be all about the food, service needs to be there as well imho. Uncle Jacks gets more of my higher end steak house dollars these days, awesome cuts, incredible service, waive corkage and they have slamming 14 ounce kobe filet's.

I've only been to Peter Luger's one time, but it was a very memorable experience, and one I would love to repeat.

Getting there was a bit of a problem from mid-Manhattan. 2 cabbies refused to take us, so we had to quickly have the hotel get us a private car. We were about 10 minutes late and worried they were going to give away the table, but that didn't happen.

The service was quite good, although different. I had been warned; so when the waiter said: "Here's what you're going to have for dinner" I just said: "OK". And certainly the waiter steered us right.

The tomato and onion salad was excellent. The steak superb; the portions ample. The steak sauce made an excellent shrimp cocktail sauce. The side hashed potatoes were delicious. The apple dessert came with a thick whipped cream (I think they called it "shlag" or something like that) which was to die for.

Wine was secondary...

Only been to NY once and we didn't hear about this place until it was too late to get a reservation. It and Per Se are at the absolute top of my "must eat at" list when we get back there hopefully in the next year or so.

You might want to add Eleven Madison Park to your list.
