Wappo has a great outdoor setting for dining and the trellis and gardens are very nice. The wine service was excellent as was the waiter. The food however was just so-so. So much sauce on the rabbit that it was damn near swimming. My duck was overcooked. Similar experience one year ago. Went back because we had experienced great and daringly different food in the past but there are many more choices now.
Saturday lunch at Bistro Ralph on the square in Healdsburg. Indifferent service, only 2 half bottles to select from. Boring food. Don't waste your time. |

Damn! I've been wasting my time eating lunch at Ralph's at least once per week
Should have had the chicken paillard. OK, not much in the half-bottle selection but they do have over a dozen wines by the glass, so hopefully you found something to drink. The best time to have white wine is when there is no red wine. |

I've had similar experiences at both restaurants in recent years. I still enjoy eating at Wappo and Bistro Ralph but the food is good, seldom great. Your comment about competition is on the money. I don't think these two restaurants have gone down hill so much as the competition has gotten better. Calistoga, too, is a tough market these days. Tourism is down in Northern Napa Valley.
