Here's the article - pretty soon we will not be able to buy foie gras produced in the US if the fowl-huggers have their way. California has already banned it and it's on the docket in NY - the only 2 states that produce. No doubt Moby and Bruuuuce will be holding benefit concerts and candlelight vigils for these poor downtrodden animals. As if the concept of PC hasn't run enough amok in this country it now extends to what I choose to put in my mouth, along with my mind.

BTW, I'm finding it difficult to CnP with this new reply window. Must be an anti-Francis thing from the Forum Police.

Yes but why would I want to watch something by people who value animals over people?

Maybe PETA should change its name to:

We're incapable of normal social interaction with humans, so we've decided to be mouthpieces for dumb animals. Plus we have the ever-erudite Alec Baldwin as spokesman, when he isn't busy screaming at his ex-wife in public.

Catchy, huh?

Or how about - PETA - we're the NAMBLA of the vegan set!

That is not really true. In 2012, the method by which foie gras is currently produced will be illegal and subsequently, the ONE producer in California (Guillermo Gonzales) has closed down his restaurant in Sonoma (Sonoma Saveurs). Guillermo is still operating his farm and is working with scientists at UC Davis to show that the production is not harmful. Foie gras is NOT banned in California whatsoever.

Here is the article I wrote fro the Napa Regsiter when the restaurant closed.

Maybe, you're just stupid.

"Over the course of many months, the coalition conducted a nationwide investigation into the domestic foie gras industry. GourmetCruelty.com uncovered flthy, crowded conditions and documented an industry standard of disregard for the pain and suffering inherent to foie gras production."

Wow. It seems to work just fine for me.

Or maybe, you're just stupid.

Thanks for the link Francis.

I didn't agree with that guy shoving a force feeding tube down the duck's entire esophagus.

The ducks sitting in the isolation cages look so sick, literally. They are so fat and their livers are so expanded that the rest of the organs in their body are shutting down.

Pretty sad.

Maybe, you're just stupid.

Every time Frances calls someone stupid, I think back to this golden oldie.

HEY Gigond Ass, you're stupid.

HEY seanr7, you're stupid too. I hope the sore on your wife's lip clears up.

Guess what Hunter, you're on the STUPID Board of Directors.

GreenDrazi, you are, at the very least, as big a childish little whiney-ass crybaby that I've ever experienced. You're stupid too.

HEY grunhauser, I'm not leaving you off the list. Have you ever met your child's father? I'll bet he thinks you're stupid.

Sorry for bringing this one back up but I could not control myself. Cool

You were dreaming about strangers' wifes again, I see. Funny, but even in your dreams you can't get anyone to share your bed with you.

Unfortunately, it seems this issue is not likely to go away very soon and I have been embroiled in the debate on a number of other food-related chat boards to the extent that I'm not ready to start another one here.

Suffice to say that I see this issue in similar terms to that of abortion; those who are both for and against it feel as passionately about it to the exclusion that any rational argument can usually sway them one way or another.

What saddens me is the lowering of personal standards to name-calling and character attacks. When I interviewed Bryan Carnell of the Animal Protection and Rescue League, the interview quickly degenerated as he went from citing scientific data to back up his argument to impugning Gonzales’ character by attacking aspects of Gonzales’ personal and private life which had no bearing whatsoever on the issues at hand. Much of my time talking with Carnell was literally "calling him on the carpet" for this behavior and trying to get him back on topic.

I will state that I am pro-foie gras. I have seen the farms where the ducks are raised and question the integrity of the PETA videos and their tactics. The ducks are not kept in small, confining pens at all, but large, open pens. However the last two weeks when the gavage (force-feeding) is done, they ARE kept in smaller cages so that they are more accessible.

Carolyn,

Thanks for the link to your article. I enjoyed a nice foie last night with a wonderful Cote du Layon.

I don't bother to look at the propaganda spouted by the animal "rights" lobby. These are truly misinformed people.

If you don't agree with how something is produced, don't buy it. The problem is, these groups inflict their distorted views on the rest of us.

Animals do not have rights. Only people do.

Agree with your sentiment wholeheartedly, Carolyn. Talking to these veganheads is a waste of time, as none of them are orbiting within the human realm or have the slightest clue of how the animals should be treated. All they do is project human feelings onto food supplies and try to make the rest of the society feel guilty for drinking milk or grilling steaks. It's an idiocy of highest degree, yet, it's a free country, and any fool is more than welcome to expose himself.

Good thread, but how does any of it relate to the title ("digestive version of smoking")?

It seems that the only basis of objection to foie gras is animal rights. It's not like consuming the stuff is carcinogenic, nor does it constitute a public health menace.

TuaRita, you're not saying that anti-smoking legislation is attributable solely to a few nut jobs wanting to protect tobacco plants from suffering???

If I knew that spending lots of time sharing the same room with people enjoying foie gras would significantly increase my risk of getting cancer, I would support a law against it.
