Help!
I'm heading to Kansas (City) next week for training and I'm desperate for advice on where to eat and what (if anything) to see. Cheers! DTS |

If you wind up in Overland Park, J. Gilbert's is a pretty good steakhouse.

quote: My favorite is Fiorella's Jack Stack. There is one in Overland Park (At either 95th or 105th and Metcalf) and there is one closer to downtown. You can ask when you get to KC, depending on where you are staying. Burnt end sandwich is great if you are looking for something other than ribs. Burnt ends are the little crispy pieces of meat that fall off briskets when they are slow cooked. Fantastic if you've never tried them. K.C. Masterpiece has several locations and I've had good experiences in their restaurants. Arthur Bryant's is "original" KC BBQ place, almost a shack with oily tables, and you get a pile of meat and two slices of white bread on the side. An experience, but not the best BBQ. Gates has several locations and is more of a fast food experience. Think McDonald's, but good BBQ. I could suggest finer restaurants, depending on what part of town you are in. Is Spenser out there somewhere? He lives in K.C. |

What part of town will you be staying in?
I can second the Jack Stack or the it cousin the Smoke Stack (in town) if you make the Jack Stack be prepared to wait about any night of the week. An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure. |

Plaza III.
Nice place, very good fine and a fairly strong wine list. **************************** "Texas is the place where there are the most cows and the least milk, the most rivers and the least water in them, and where you can look the farthest and see the least." H. L. Mencken No place like home. |

KC is a great reataurant town. Once you get here, you'll have a lot to choose from.
Barbecue: Personally, I think Gate's is over-rated. Their sauce is too salty. Hayward's in Overland Park is good. Arthur Bryant's has a wierd yellow vinegar-based sauce which I like though I prefer the traditional spicy red-brown sauce. If you want to go Italian, Macaluso's on 39th Street is very good and has a good wine list but it's easy to drop a C-note on dinner for two. For something less pricey, but not cheap, try PotPie on Westport Road. The wine list is iffy, but you can probably find a wine you like, and the wine prices are outrageously cheap! There is a small limited bistro-type menu. One or two fish dishes, a steak, a couple of pot pies, a few appetizer's, all very good. (It's owned by some friends of mine and my wife used to work there.) McCormick and Schmicks on the Plaza is an upscale seafood chain restaurant, but if you've money to burn, you can get a nice meal and a good wine. Matzu's in Westport has good sushi and sashimi and serves a few decent wines. If I think of anyplace else, I'll post again. |

We just spent a long weekend in Kansas City and enjoyed some good food, good wine, and good people.
A few comment on the restaurants we visited: McCormik and Schmick's on Country Club Plaza - A nicely appointed seafood restaurant. Food was very good, service fair-good, wine list fair, the bill was $60/adult including wine. Starker's Reserve on Country Club Plaza - Serving continental cuisine in an elegant, cozy atmosphere. Food was tremendous, service was excellent, the wine list claims 1500 entries and was very impressive. With wine, our tab averaged $110/person, but was worth it.. 40 Sardines in the 119th St. area - Contemporary Mediterranean cuisine in a casual, hip, sophisticated dining area that was loud and crowded. The Food was outstanding, service was adequate, the wine list was fair, and our cost was $90/person with wine. Got acid? @@@@@@@@@@@@ Everyone has to believe in something. I believe I’ll have another glass of wine. |

Purple...
I'm originally from KC. The places you ate at are some of the best. "Fair thoughts and happy hours attend on you!!" |
