Besides stretching a wine's production level as well as improving brand marketing for some of the lesser recognized grapes that are blended with Chardonnay grapes, can you think of anything else that blending with Chardonnay achieves?
Same thing blending with any grape achieves. More/less roundness, acidity, depth, complexity, etc. Viura for example, has a slightly bitter finish in many cases. Adding chardonnay can soften that a bit. I don't see any reason not to blend any varietal if it gives something to the wine.
