Hi all,

Might seem like a dopey question, but I picked up a bottle of wine (Raymond 2001 Cab. Reserve) that I've had on the rack for a year or so, and noticed a bit of sticky red residue seeping out from around the foil. No, I haven't peeled back the foil yet to inspect, but I'm assuming that the wine inside is wasted right? I was hoping to hang onto this for a couple more years, but unless someone says this is in any way normal, I'm going to open the sucker this weekend to see what's doing?

Is this seepage common?

It's too young a wine for any expected seepage due to normal cork deterioration. My guess is the bottle was subjected to a lot of heat at some point, causing wine to seep out. It's also possible the cork was defective. I'd open the wine soon and have a backup bottle ready to go if this one is madeirized.

Just one more sip.

Thx Board-O,

Assuming the wine shop didn't cook my bottle, I've stored it in good shape, so I'd expect a funky cork. I'll open it in a couple of days to see if I've got a bottle of sherry. I'd bought a second bottle of the Raymond (it appears to be fine), so all's not lost.

Just opened the bottle. Maybe a bit of a sherry-like quality to it (just maybe), but I have to admit, it's delicious. I'll post some notes in the tasting section.
