Never been much of a looker, but my friend is getting hitched and I was thinking about springing for a imperial.

Do same rules apply on seepage and fill levels?

Found a couple 1990 imperials but they're all around mid to high shoulder fill.

Bad/good?

Anything below low neck on a bottle of this age should be treated as potentially problematic. Mid-shoulder? Definite pass.

I agree. If these are Imperials of Bordeaux, they're gonna need some more time in the bottle. Over the past decade, I've opened some 1979 Imperials of Pichon Lalande and Leoville Las Cases. They had ideal fills and the wines were truly outstanding. If you start with wines that may have compromised corks, you're taking a big risk.

Just one more sip.

A 1990 imperial with a mid shoulder level?
It must have been kept above the stove for the last ten years at least.
