I don't think I've even smelled a blackcurrant in my life, much less actually eaten one. And yet it's one of the more commonly referenced aromas out there.

For that matter, I don't recall ever seeing any for sale either. (I think they were actually banned here in the States for many, many decades, which might have something to do with it.)

So, what a fella to do? Can you get these in any sort of grocery store nowadays? Specialty stores? Ethnic groceries? Is there a good substitute?

Thanks!

- Jeff

P.S. While we're at it... what's a good place to pick up some lychee nuts? No idea what those smell like either, but at least I have a vague recollection of seeing them for sale on a shelf somewhere. Smile

Here's just one source. Click. I see them occasionally at good produce retailers. A purchase of some good black currant preserves would be a good shortcut to give you the basic idea.

"Hey guys, What does graphite taste like?"

that was nice PHaze, an Italian drinker too!
I hate when you help a newer drinker and they are nasty back at you.

I empathise, Offnotes.

Hortex is apolish comapny that makes blackcurrant juice and jam available in US stores. Google, buy, taste, it's very accurate.

i grew up on the stuff.

I should tape more carefully.

Hortex is a Polish company that imports into the US.

Also the company Tymbark makes an accurate balck currant juice.

I have found the european jams and juices to be most accurate in flavor.

NJ Cabbie
I was just kidding about the graphite/ pencil lead. As a child I was dumb enough to bite the pencil.

Hey, there's one guy here who claims to know the taste of drawn blood, barnyard, and underbrush. Who knows what else he hasn't tasted!

Just one more sip.
