Brand new member here. I'm starting to become more passionate about wine, and would like to start a collection. Where should I start? Do I need to go out and spend $1000+ on a cooling/humidifier unit or build a cellar? I have a couple of bottles (Brunello) that I am keeping in the basement for now, but this is clearly not ideal long term.

Please help! I would ideally like suggestions on something that can be affordably done.

There are more complete answers on the forums but to recap.

What do you like to drink.

When would you like to drink it.

Does it warrant you collecting what you like to drink that won't be drunk in XXX years.

Do you want to waste the time and space storing something you won't drink for XXX years.

If you can answer those questions, then ask yourself how many bottles you'd like to keep for long term, multiply that by 2 and that's how much storage you would need. If that's under 1000$ you've met your goal.

Paully25,

Welcome aboard! g-man knows his stuff, great advice.

Your basement might not be as bad as you think. If it keeps a pretty even temperature of 50-60 F yearround, and doesn't spike below 40 in winter, or above 75 degrees or so in the dead of summer, you should be in good shape.

A good wine shop might have an offsite facility to store your wine, and will keep you from looking at (and drinking) keepers, and might be cheaper than you think. A nice big four-digit cooler can be a great investment, but I prefer to spend the money on wine.

Above all, don't go blow a wad of money on wine that has good scores, or a popular name. Attend LOTS of tastings to fine out what you like. One reviewer's 96 pointer is another reviewer's 80 pointer. Learn to trust your own palate.

Thank you both! I have the ideal cellar location in my basement. The Canadian climate is ideal for a basement cellar, and I have a space that is about 6x12 that has a lower ceiling in the basement, so it seems to be perfect for a cellar.

I hear you on the scores!
