I'm a new guy to wine, who has recently been exploring with great gusto and enthusiasm.
Last night, I picked up a bottle of Columbia Winery Cellarmaster's Riesling 2006, which I heard was very tasty. Now, it might be another week or two before I pull this baby out, so I'm wondering: should I put it in the fridge NOW, or just keep it at 65F and then chill it the day before serving? I have heard 2 differing opinions of it, and want to hear your input on it.
Also, I have 2 wines: one the Columbia Valley Riesling 2006 and a Southeastern Australia 2007 Cabernet Sauvingnon. Which is best for breaking out for a good occasion, and which is just a good casual wine?
Having your wine in the fridge for a week (on its side!) won't probably hurt it, but the sure-fire bet would be to store it as pape de neuf suggests and cool it the day before your event.
As to your second question, I don't think you can really say which wine is more appropriate for a special occasion. I think the more important question is what you're planning on eating at these two occasions. That would more significantly influence when to drink each wine.
Can you clarify? Do you have specific events in mind?
Also, try a Riesling from Chateau Ste. Michelle, Seven Hills, and Bookwalter. I think you'll like them as well (keeping with the Washington theme...).
Cheers!
