After some recent discussions about 'classic' and 'modern' Brunelli and 'volatile acidity' I tought it was worthwhile to pick one particular TN from my recent Montalcino visit:

  • 2001 Case Basse (Soldera) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva - Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino (5/23/2008)
Montalcino visit Spring 2008; 22-5-2008-23-5-2008 (Montalcino): Light ruby colour. Loads of cherry, leather, orange rind and some floral hints on the nose. Keeps on evolving in the glass. Fascinating! Following trough full bodied with chewy layers of tannins, fresh acidity and a velvety mouth feel. rounded of by a looooong finish. WOW what a wine. This one has the structure to last. But it was quite fascinating already. Drink '?? (now if you wish!) - 2030.

Last year when I tasted it, I came no further than "some cherry and loads of acidity". And to be frank, I had the same experience with the '99 the year before. Now, I finally seem to have come to terms with this outstanding wine. Classic Brunello! (96 pts.)

I would much appreciate any feedback on this!

Great tasting note. I had the '97 in Montalcino last November and rated it one of the best wines I've ever had.

Suckling says the volatile acidity on these wines is way too high, which I completely disagree with. I love the style of these wines and wish I could afford them more often!

Quickly, bring me a beaker of wine, so that I may wet my mind and say something clever. - Aristophanes
