2001 Edmunds St. John Syrah - USA, California (3/28/2006)
This was poured blind at Anwar's house on Saturday when Pyang came into town. Not sure who brought it. I've never had a wine from this producer before and know very little about them. This had some baby powder on the nose. Some nice meaty notes but the red fruit was a bit thin on the finish. Some heat also showed up on the tail end of this wine. 87-88 points.

One of my favorite new-world Rhone varietal producers. They make the wine in Berkeley but source grapes from some well known vineyards (Durell comes to mind). Generally I find their wines more classic, food friendly, not lacking in character, and never in the overoaked, hyperextracted mold. A favorite is their 'Los Robles Viejos' Chateauneuf blend....I think we've gone through nearly a case in the last year.

I've got a couple '97 ESJ Parmalee Hill Syrah in the cellar; the last one I opened (2 yrs. back) was really starting to sing. I'm planning on drinking these two sometime this year.
