Anybody had it yet?
The 2000, for $7.99, received a favorable rating of 88 and was a Best Buy. The WineExchange is raving about the 01 being better.
If that's the case, be on the lookout. Price is still 7.99 by the way. Tremendous QPR.

The 2000 Shiraz was quite good for the money, I will keep an eye out for the 2001.

I asked for the 2000 here in Kansas a few months ago when the rating came out, but my local wine shop hadn't heard of it, and after checking with the distributors, believed that it wasn't available in Kansas. [Frown]

I'd love to try it though...

I haven't tasted it yet, but was mighty impressed with the 2000 so fully intend to pick some up ASAP.

FYI, until today I had only seen it for $9.99 - then ran across it on page 3 of the Wine Exchange mailer for $7.99 - WhoooHooo! Same price as last year [Smile] www.winex.com />
(no affiliation or commercial interest, yada yada)

I received my case of Paringa from Winex the other day - tried to resist a little longer to let it settle down from shipping, but couldn't resist popping a bottle tonight.

Good news, this stuff rocks! Is it better than the 2000? Well, jury is out until I place them side by side, but initial impressions is, you bet! Here are the tasting notes I entered in my log:

Beautiful deep opaque purple in color, the 2001 retains the wonderfully lively, perfumed, almost sweet nose of the 2000. Very similar in many ways to the 2000 vintage with even a bit more structure and backbone. Rich, dense, with brambly fruit and a bit of cassis and cocoa. Tannins are clearly present and accounted for this young, yet not overwhelming and should integrate even better in time. Really nice stuff that will only improve over the next 4-6 years. 90 points

Eric

Had this last night. Nose is wonderful, and the legs were attractive. fruit fades a little on the finish as it becomes a lttle hot but the finish is a good 15 sec. at $8 is probably the best Aussie shiraz for that price. cheaper & better than Rosemount, Lehman. 88 pts.

Looks like I'm the voice of dissension on this one. I had this as part of a blind tasting. It was unanimously last out of 6 wines. I'll attempt to write notes from memory. Unfriendly, low fruit, lacks structure and character. Will not improve in the cellar. Bottle variation? Bought all bottles for the tasting at the Wine Library but they may now be out of stock.

Jazin, it just so happens that the Marquis Philips was the unanimous winner of the tasting(see the TN thread on the Marquis Philips).

Hey bugguy don't dispair certainly you have some buds in KCMO. Winex ships to MO. and its available for 7.99/btl on their website. Shipping should run about 28 bucks a case but no sales tax. I would advise maybe waiting until this 100 degree nonsense abates but I've had good luck with Winex during the the rest of the year(lots of family in KC) Also lawine and grapetray on the web for some good deals. If you buy some more expensive wines the sales tax savings will almost cover the shipping, and the prices and selection on the web beats most retail in Kansas. Cheers

Picked this wine up and opened tonight- found for at 8.99 at 2 NJ shops. While it has opened up in the past hour since opening- I agree its not as good as Marquis Phillips which I think is a much bigger wine.I am starting to get a hint of
roasted black cherry and carmel now on the finish... but it is still a bit lighter and a bit flat on the finish. Still not bad for the price, though. I may cork it up and try again tomorrow nt. I am also currently tasting the 2000 Certain Views 2000 Orange Shiraz which was also 8.99... even lighter and less fruit and not much finish at all.
I wanted to try all 3- looking for a wine that I can buy a case of and set aside for office holiday gifts- I'd say Marquis Phillips 2001 Shiraz wins!

Hmmm. Just tasted again before I gas them for the night. Both of these wines have gotten better in the past hour... but now its time to go to sleep!
We'll see tomorrow nt.

I missed this thread over the past few days and coincidentally picked up two bottles of this "value-priced" wine yesterday afternoon. Before posting my notes, I searched and found this thread....
Anyway -- my comments below:
Dark, almost opaque purplish/red color. Nose of blackberries and freshly roasted coffee beans. On the palate, it was medium- to full-bodied, with intense coffee flavors overshadowing the berries, plus some faint hints of rhonish-meatiness on the mid-palate. Well-balanced with firm acidity and well-integrated tannins on a medium finish. Practically no varietal spicy-peppery flavors at all, though.
A nice, well-rounded red wine at an extraordinarily good price – just $9/bottle. 89 points in my book. Could have been higher if the berry flavors had been a bit more pronounced and if there had been a touch of spiciness. But, still, terrific QPR. I’ll buy this wine by the case...

I gassed these wines over night- and they both improved considerably the 2nd nt. The fruit was much more pronounced. Still like the Marquis Phillips better- but these wines are still a good buy at 8.99!

Anyone in the PAC NW have a source for this wine? I'm intrigued in trying it out as WS just rated the 2001 90 pts. I've tried a couple of my local haunts and have come up dry. [Frown]

O.K.,
I'm back after a couple of bottles and I agree: It IS better than the 2000. Quite a little gem for everyday consumption if you ask me.
RedRedVine,
Try Larry's Markets and Esquin.

Concurrence consensus! Possible Best Buy for the year with the great QPR. A couple of Frnch VDP's (syrah/grenache mixes) are in the running too - Mas de Guiot & Domaine des Amouriers (same $8 range)

RedRed,
Larry's has it on sale this month. I'm picking up a case today. If you belong to the Epicurean Club there, it's 10% over cost. Your first purchase would pay for the membership. Best to order cases of this Aussie, great everyday wine and then some.

Just picked up a bottle of this for $10 locally. I am trying it tonight. If it is as good as everyone says, I'll buy a case at Wine Library for $8 per.

As you're tasting just reflect on other sub $10 glasses of swill you've choked down (or dumped) previously.
I have a feeling that you'll say, as I did, "Wow, this is the best $8 wine I've ever had."

Better Red Than Not!

I'll second Decanter's view. Not bad for what it is (a $10 bottle) but it is not "case-worthy" to me. Looks like we're the odd men out Decanter. [Roll Eyes]

The wholesaler in Atlanta is holding it back for some reason. Only place I have seen it is Beverage Depot in Alpharetta for anyone looking.

Just saw this at WL today.... almost went for a bottle but didn't. Now seeing this thread, perhaps I will. Not sure about the case buying though if the marquis philips is supposedly better.... there is still a lot of 2001 MP around. I also have a 1 1/2 cases of Rosemount 2000 Diamond Label to get through... Overload of the cheap 90 point shiraz! (Only because my cellar can't hold it, not cause I don't want it!)

All-

Thanks for the tips. I finally found a source for it today after talking to several wine shops. If there are others in PDX that are looking for this, try the New Seasons Markets. Although they are usually more expensive, they do carry it for $9.99. I will be stopping by shortly with my wheelbarrow.
