I've been sitting on my collection the past couple of years waiting for them to come around. I was not overly impressed with the first one I uncorked in 2007, and someone on this board said wait until ten years after vintage date. Anyone have any notes on this wine at year 6 cause I am not sure I wanna wait until 2013.

Download Cellar Tracker to your computer. I believe it is free to browse people's tasting notes on this wine as well as past vintages. I tried the 2005 in late 2008, and it was definitely too young for me. I kinda agree with waiting at least till Year 6 for the Melchors to soften the tannins abit and integrate the oak.

You will find what you are looking for if you actually try a search...I realize this is extremely complicated

You don't have to download anything. Just go to the website.

I had a bottle about 6 months ago and was really underwhelmed.....It was my 3rd bottle since it was released, all of which were pyrazene bombs in my opinion. If you have these, I would wait, or do what I did after 3 bottles that I did not like, do the LCBO trick and return them.
This is overrated in my opinion year in and out.

I opened one a week ago with my cousin. The wine was an auction purchase so I cannot speak to how it was stored for most of its life.

We opened, poured a glass and then let the rest sit in bottle for 3 hours. At that point, the wine was ready to go. Good dark fruit profile - heavy and extracted. I thought it was a good value and ready to start drinking. It seemed like the tannins still might have a little "resolution" in their future, but I am not sure. Based on this bottle, I would not be afraid to open one up. Open it a little early in case you need to air it out in a decanter.

Had the 05 last night.. a bit tight to start, but the big dark fruit showed more as the night wore on, went well with the steak and the steakhouse fare. Nice mouthfeel and finish too.

Oh yeah, agree with the previous recommendations... lots of notes on cellartracker...

prior thread here

----------
"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams . If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

After reading this thread, and the one Red Guy linked to, it seems this wine really divides people into the nearly classic/classic opinions and the overhyped/underwhelmed opinions.

Interesting.

Opened last night...was VERY tight. Dark fruit, coffee aromas, that's about it. Saved most of the bottle for tonight. Will report back later!

Way too tight night one. Vinturi-ed, decanted, swirled...didn't matter.

Night two...opened up a bunch. Nose of cassis, ash and pepper. Heavy, dark fruit highlighted by plum and black cherry on the palate which, at this point, resembles an Aussie shiraz more than a cab. Loads of pepper and coffee on the back end, with decent acidity and sweet, round tannins. Quite high octane, and dominated by the pepper. Definitely needs extended decanting at this point.

40+5+5+16+17+8=91
