Bright amber color, almost orange. The nose was predominately chemical in nature. I heard paint and wet cement, but immediatly thought of concrete curer. Not the best descriptor (unless you happen to work in the concrete business), and not something you'd normaly look for in a wine. There was also some fruit (apricots) and minerals in the background.

Still had strong apricot and white fruit taste. A full textured wine. Good complexity, every drink was slightly different. Again, some mineral coming through and maybe some nuts (hazelnut?). A long and strong finish.

My first experiance with an aged German. Somewhat of an aquired taste that many at dinner didn't enjoy. I enjoyed the complexity and look forward to trying more aged Rieslings. The question is, can I wait 20 some years for my 2001s to age?

FreeTheGrapes opened this bottle at the end our our dinner last night. Thanks FTG for my first aged German wine and also the oldest wine I've had the pleasure of drinking.

Thetwood, sounds like it was a great bottle. I love such wines but you are correct. Many do not find such petrol-chemical qualities appealing. More for us! Wink

Most 2001 Auslese will certainly age for 20 years.

I don't really know much about German wines, especially older vintages. I just copied down what it said on the lable. I did a quick Google search and found a '1966 Weingut Geschwister Bibo. Kiedricher Wasseros Riesling', so it's definately been used before. Pretty sure it was a Kiedricher Wasseros, but will check when I get home tonight.

The really cool thing about this note is that "how many people can say they had a '71 riesling last night" That is why drinking wine can be a pure joy. Thanks for the TN.

Sorry about that tsunami, misread your post. As for R. Weil making wine at that time, I checked the lable again last night and it's correct as posted. Guess they did make wine then. Smile

T-Wood!

Nice post. Aged Riesling is definitely an acquired taste; not for the uninitiated!

Looking forward to saving some of the 2001's until 2033! Wink
