i am wondering if German auction wines are really that much better than the non-auction ones even if they are from the same vineyard, producer, quality and vintage.( the auction one is like at least 75 % more expensive than non-auction one if not more)

And i am wondering if Dr.Loosen and JJ Prum is being over priced in USA or not. I have read a few articles that said over 50% or Dr.Loosen and JJ Prum's wines are being exported and it is not as highly regarded in Germany as in USA.

And anyone know where is a good place to buy some good high-end german wine in usa?

And can anyone recommend me some good German wines ?

I don't know much about the "auction" price. I know that there is a Donnhoff that is selling for 4X the regular price. Other than being hard to get, I have no idea how this could be any better.

The producers that are usually mentioned as being the best are Donnhoff, Muller-Catoir, J.J. Christoffel, J.J. Prum and Maximin Grunhaus. Once in awhile people will mention Dr. Loosen.

I would do a quick review of Terry Theise's write-ups of the 2001 German wines (http://www.vinonet.com/terrytheise/tt2002.pdf). It's about 170 pages, but it is interesting and informative. Then I would do a search on www.winesearcher.com and put in Donnhoff or one of the other good producers in the search field to find out a retailer in your area.

I've bought 9 cases of the 2001 futures already, so that should tell you what I think of them. And I have not even bought any Prum or Maximin Grunhaus yet. Good luck.

leesunhee,

i guess gatc did not answer your question [Roll Eyes] ,did he?

almost every auction wine from vdp-winerys
are better than the regular!
why?
because you only would get a highter price if
you bring the better wine [Wink] (all wines can
be tasted bevor auction)

same vineyard - yes!
producer - yes!
vintage - yes!
quality - no! (always look at the barrel/lot number! it's the second last number, mostly bold
or bigger or smaller than the rest!

beleve me you (USA) get 50% of the production
not because they are not hightly regardet in europe, but and only because you just pay more!

producer:
it seems you know them well [Roll Eyes]
but try also 2000 and 2001 clemens busch!

cheers
