$348CAD, available through the Spring/Summer LCBO Classics Catalogue. You might be lucky to find some in the U.S.

A little darker than the '95, more golden in colour. More subtle nose as well. Fine, fine bubbles in the glass, like a bead of pearls. Apple, yeast and lemon peel on the nose leading to flavours of granny smith apple, lemon, biscuit, cream, toast, liquid caramel, and figs. An unbeliveably long finish that went on for minutes with honey and walnuts and toast. The most amazing Champagne I've ever had. The freshness and solid acidity surprised me. This one still has plenty of stuffing to age many more years.- 96 points

It was available in Ontario at $129CAD (I think?), but when I ordered it, they were sold out. They sent the '85 instead at $169CAD.

At $99USD, it's still a good deal.

1990 Salon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos du Mesnil - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne (11/24/2006)
WIML96+,NOWA,WS97

Tasted November 24, 2006 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in a Riedel Vinum Cuvee Prestige glass. Light yellow color in the glass, clear hue throughout with a nice mousse. Nose of pears, yellow apples and “bread dough”. Flavors of crisp yellow apples, pears, light tropical fruit notes and a touch of freshly baked bread. Perfectly balanced and harmonious. One of the best Champagnes I’ve tasted. Drink or hold. (96 pts.)

wiml,

What a wine indeed, and the greatest finish I have ever enjoyed in a Champagne. In 25 years of enjoying Champagne, this and the '88 Krug are the finest for me. A 98 point wine imo to be enjoyed with food.

Now if I were sitting on a loggia at my favorite Tuscan villa with my wife watching the sunset over the vineyards, this would have been a 100 point wine for me. Wink

Well, it was one week ago tonight we enjoyed this wine with winetex and others.

A week is long enough to try again, so pulling one again tonight. Smile I hope it shows as well as last week.

When I hit send, my first thought was I know this guy born in 1961, and I told him I had a bottle we might open on his birthday.

That was my very first thought, and I'm sure PH will wimp out (He is a Redskin fan you know) so your safe to turn 50. Big Grin

I so wish I was born in a good year for wine, and also wish I was born in '61. Wink

I've had this wine once. Every time I read a TN talking about the incredible finish I wonder if my bottle was 'off' -- if it was I really envy you guys because I LOVED it. Here was my TN from a few months ago...

Incredible nose. Yeasty with almonds, orange zest, tiny berries, and just a hint of sherry. AWESOME attack with the same notes. There is a loamy mushroomy (porcini) type quality to this that is just unbelievable. This may have been one of the best Champagnes I've ever had if not for the slightly watery finish. In any case, this was on my 'wines to try before I die' list and it really didn't dissapoint. Not the best Champagne I've ever had, but not so far off the mark. This will probably improve over the next 3-4 years and then last another 5 (at least). 94.5(+?)

15,

Watery finish! Eek Surely you jest! Confused

I found the finish the best on any Champagne I have enjoyed, and I have had my fair share of great Champagne. Do you have more in your cellar? If not, may I suggest the '96. I have only had one bottle, but oh my!!! Big Grin

Nope, not jesting. That is what is so weird, everything else about the wine was fantastic... best attack of any Champagne I've ever had. But the finish was lacking and every other TN I read on this wine talks about the amazing finish. I wasn't the only person at the table with this reaction, still it was an awesome Champagne. Sadly, my one time tasting the '88 Krug was also, while a great experience, not what -- apparently -- some bottles of that are.

I will try to get my hands on some '96, I love me some Champagne. FWIW, as far and Blanc de Blanc still on the market, have you tried the '95 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne? Awesome stuff. So sad Premier Cru is out Frown

Note to self... I will bring the Champagne when you and I offline together sometime in 2007! Wink

The 95 Taittinger is awesome. Not quite as good as the 90 Salon but excellent in a different style.

So how was that second bottle of 90 Salon (you lucky, lucky dog...). ?

Winetex, it was much better than the one we shared together... because I only had to split this bottle with one other person (wife) and I drink much faster and more than she. Razz Big Grin

Agree on different style (and probably not quite as good) but I just had it on the mind... I tried to order more from PC three days ago and they were out. Tragic. I'm down to 2 bottles.
