This wine was a big disapointment. Barnyard nose which never went away despite 3 hours decanting, lack of structure. Seems like the wine is in the dumb stage and can use a few more years in the bottle.

Serge, are you sure its the wine? Perhaps it was the wine drinker?

Nope, I am not sure...

serge,

Bordeaux vintage 1998 was not a great vintage for those left bank wines from St Estephe, Pauillac, & Margaux. It was far better for the right bank wines of Pomerol & St Emilion. I would have saved that 1998 Montrose till 2013 or after.

Any thoughts on the status of 1998 Calon-Ségur & Lafon-Rochet?

Serge, I think your Montrose may have needed a few more years to show its stuffing. Do you have more?

alas, you are right. I have lots of 1998 from left bank and so far, only found Leoville Poyferre worth drinking now.
(yes, Roel, from your favorite part, St Juilen! Smile

Roel,
it was a last bottle in the store, so there is a good chance I'll never know how this wine tastes in 2013
Smile

Roel,
I also registered at Joe Belmaati's board. No fluff, great TN's and easy to navigate/search.
LMK if you wanna check it out and I'll e-mail you the URL.

While in Bordeaux in 1999, I had a lot of barrel samples and did not buy any left bank wines as a result. They were far too austere.

However, I would think both the Calon-Segur & the Lafon Rochet would improve with 5 to 8 more years of bottle age. I have tasted the Calon-Segur but not the Lafon Rochet. Also the Pontet-Canet was exceptionally tannic, and I don't think it has enough fruit to outlast the tannins.

Thanks Latour67,

I placed these St.-Estephe bottles in my 'long-term storage' anyway, so I'll check on them in 2012 or so. Pontet-Canet = tannins, so it always seems. Still hoping for my PC '89s to soften up without loosing fruit... Confused

Lucky you! In 1999 I was copathetic with Chianti Riserva and haven't even looked the other way. "Knowlege is Power" and you got it!

Indeed, a great château. Visited it last year and was guided by the oenologe Isabelle Davin herself. Great knowledge, little 'format' Razz

The 2003 will become a monster. The 2002 was very classic and refined and the 2000 was...extremely closed. Try again in 2010...

BTW, if you can't pay Poyferré anymore, Lagrange is a very nice 'poor men's Poyferré'... Cool
